Setting up Equalizer 10K 4pt

I did some searching and did not see this answered anywhere, so i apologize if it is.

I am buying an Equalizer 4pt 10K hitch and will set it up myself. When it comes to installing the ball, the instructions mention using a socket. does anyone know if the socket is required or if a wrench would work as well?

Basically, do I have to use this?
1-7/8" 12pt Socket - 3/4" Drive - Chromium-Vanadium Steel Powerbuilt Tools ALL643216

or can I use this?
Curt 6-Point Hex Wrench for Trailer Hitch Balls with 3/4" or 1" Diameter Shanks Curt Accessories and Parts C20001

I realize these are not the same size, just trying to determine if either will suffice or one is required over the other. Reason I ask, is I don't have a 3/4" drive wratchet or breaker bar, so i would have to buy that in addition to the socket.

Thanks,
Mike

Setting up Equalizer 10K 4pt

If it is like the 14k I have, the socket will be required. [ATTACH]131383

The nut is completely recessed.

I am 99% sure it is, but mine is stowed away right now.

EDIT: Do like I did, went to the local trailer joint and gave them a few buck to tighten it up.

I just finished torquing mine down this past weekend. Yes, you need the socket. The nut is in the recessed area and won't accommodate a wrench.

I simply wedged the handle end of a large crescent wrench in between the nut and the head. Worked great.

Northern tool for the socket, harbor freight for the breaker bar. Less than $10 each.

You will save money by just taking it to a local rv dealer to have it torqued to the proper specs (430 ft/lbs I think). I did that with mine.

Make sure you get a thin walled socket...not much space in there.

X2 - unless you've got a giant torque wrench to go with it! (Of course, this assumes the RV place has a giant torque wrench, too! )

The torque wrench will set you back about $400!

Torque = force (or weight) x distance. Using a breaker bar and a pipe extension you should be able to figure out how to torque it to the correct amount. For example, a 200# person standing on the pipe extension at 2 ft from the socket = 200lbs. x 2ft. = 400 lb-ft.

Just don't blame me if you fall off the pipe extension and hurt yourself!
