From personal experience, that end of the safety chain is immaterial. It's the other end that matters.

I added orange vinyl lettering to my WDH hitch to remind me to remove the sleeve after removing the hitch. Way to easy to forget. As for the safety chain I agree the the weakest link is the connection of the chain to the trailer.

They wouldn't be supporting the full weight of the trailer. Unless, of course, your axles all fell off too.

X2. And that bar isn't much; I believe it's the weak link in the entire system. My chains were too short and when I first backed into my driveway, you can see what happened. (The chains and hooks held up just fine!)

Here's the hooks on a couple of my trailers. They fit just fine on the hitch on my Gmc 3500.

No it is not Same here, my chains were too short also.

At least Lippert is consistent with their welds as can be seen in your picture.........S%#tty all the time. My 3 yr old grand daughter can probably run a better bead.

The hooks on my TT look just like MillerTime's, and they fit my '13 2500 easily. all I have to do is hook them on the side facing down. My work trailer has similar, yet smaller hooks, and I can still get them on, if I hook them facing UP on the sides. Also guys, there are 2 1/2" drawbars available. I got one simply because I couldn't stand all the rattling and shucking with an adapter.

I keep a pair of shackles under my back seat for this just so I don't forget them. Windjammer chain hooks are big enough that I don't need them.
Sunset trail and my 16 ft flatbed won't go, I need the shackles.

I don't guess any of my trailers have long enough safety chains, I barely have enough without crossing them. so I keep having people walk up to me and say "you know you're supposed to cross those safety chains, right?"

I test drove my truck probably 15 miles before making an offer. while the salesman was inside I was walking around it looking for flaws. The receiver insert was just laying in the receiver loose so I took it out and put it under the back seat. It's a wonder it didn't fall out.
The salesman came running out to me after we made the deal with one in his hand saying I'd need this, my honesty overcame me and I told him there was one under the back seat.
I put my union emblem in the receiver insert now with a locking pin to keep it from falling out when I'm not towing.

Also the hole in the 2.5" receiver and the insert is about 1/4" off from the regular 2" receiver hole. The USA flag I've proudly mounted in my hitch since 1992 wouldn't line up. The union emblem had enough material I could drill it out but my flag doesn't.

That's a great idea. I've been lucky I didn't damage any vehicles driving behind me as I drove around for an afternoon with the sleeve just resting in there. Found it still there when I returned to the campground.

Back on topic, I've been able to get my safety chains attached, but where I have issues is with the emergency braking tether. Tried different D rings from a feed/hardware store similar to tractor supply and no dice.

My brake tether has a loop on the end. I run the loop through one of the holes in the hitch, then use this "quick link" to connect the loop to the standing part coming from the trailer (i.e., "back on itself").

Not a fan of shackles, took FR connections off end of chains, did not work on GMC tv. Purchased a couple of hooks from Tractor Supply that fit just fine. The hooks came with a pin and cotter pin to secure the hook on to last link of chain.

X2 on these and if you think your chains are too short, double up

Put a carribeener type snap clip on the brake cable and hook it on to the link makes it a lot simpler to hook up

All, Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up changing the hooks. I added one quick link to give me just a little extra length since I have to hook them on the back side of the hitch. The locking pin is in the way of hooking them thru the front holes.
