Silverado 3500 And GM
I have a 2012 Silverado 3500 diesel and here I was 2,000 miles from home and check engine light comes on, emissions problem. Took truck in to nearest dealer, they fixed truck. At first they said the code reader showed two bad glow plugs plus a bad nox sensor. I paid the bill they said GM was going to pay for the bad glow plug even though the truck was out of warranty. No problem. This morning hooked truck to camper and started to pull out and check engine comes on again, checked with code reader and another bad glow plug. Called the dealer back and was told GM would only pay for one bad glow plug at the time. Me 2,000 miles away from home and GM will only pay for one glow plug on the invoice. What a bummer. I'm looking at a new truck, a dually, I may look at Dodge

????? Why would GM be expected to cover it if the warranty is expired? It's doubtful Ford, Dodge, or anyone else would cover it either after the warranty is up? That's why they have time / mileage limits on warranties?

Every truck dealer I've seen has a repair shop attached to it. You won't be any happier with any of the brands service either. When the warranty runs out..it runs out.

This is what make sense to me...it's WAY cheaper than switching trucks.
If I understood the post correctly, it sounds to me like you should be upset with the dealer for their communication (or lack thereof) rather than GM who paid for repairs (albeit only partially) even though they had no obligation to pay for anything.

Unless you're looking for an excuse to buy another truck, just put glow plugs in - they don't last forever. If you never want to replace glow plugs again get a Cummins
Edit: Do you even need glow plugs in North Carolina? There are kits to remove them in the Duramax.

I am with the OP. Get rid of the Chevy. Ford would be a good choice too in addition to the Cummins! That age of truck had issues up here with salt and road brine. They use them for ditch fill.

The Ram/ Cummins engine dose not use glow plugs! The engine is designed to use a grid heater on the intake side of the engine. You can start and run the truck without a grid heater, in fact the hotter rodder crowd removes the grid heater. One less maintenance item to replace when something goes wrong. The Cummins engine is a very reliable designed engine with less moving parts than a Powerstroke/Duramax V8 diesel. The Cummins is a straight 6 cylinder engine with all the horsepower and torque you will need to pull with.

The grid heater is supposed to be very reliable - the studs however have been a problem for a few. Glow plugs don't seem to last very long.

The reason the dealer covered the glow plug under warranty is because GM has a special policy on the glow plugs for 10 years or 120,000 miles which ever occurs first. Only the failed glow plug/plugs can be replaced.

In my family we have four Dodge Ram trucks with the Cummins engine in them. All the way from a 96 1ST gen truck to a 2013 4TH gen truck with mine being a 10 year old 2008 Ram Mega Cab with the 6.7 L engine. We have never had any stud issues with the Air Horn attachment point
Now if you are asking about the head stud issue that only occurs when you add increase horsepower and BOOST pressure over stock HP settings.

GM special policy
The special policy is on 2010-2012 GMC and Chev 6.6 diesels only.

Not talking about head studs, grid heater studs. Some have broken and gone into the engine. Not a common issue thankfully, but has happened to a few.

????
My 13+ year old Duramax has never needed anything but oil and filters. I guess maybe "last very long" is a relative term?

Glow plugs just wear out after a while. No big problem. I had two bad ones last year. Once one goes the others a generally not too far behind. $120 and a couple hours work and I changed them all. (The rear two on the driver's side are a royal pain to get to!) I have a 3007 2500 HD Classic with Duramax and love the truck for pulling my 5er!!
This is nothing I'd trade a truck for...just change them and go on.

$16 each for glow plugs and 20 minutes to replace them. I've replaced 2 in the last 40,000 miles. Code gets thrown but the only negative is the remote start won't work with a code thrown.

Over the road driver for 40 years now retired. I own a 6.0 gas burner and would not buy a diesel due to the inflated prices. It takes 200 thousand miles to equal the price difference between the two. I dont travel enough to justify the cost.
