So where is the difference?

The top bar is a 1200# bar. The bottom is a 1500# bar. They are dimensionally identical by my calipers and weigh the same. So where is the difference? This one of those things that just nags at you. Not like DW but nags just the same.Click image for larger version

From the looks of them in the bottom picture, I would guess the bottom one is the 1500# one.

The bottom one looks to be slightly thicker the full length of the taper. Measure down the distance (i.e. 2", 4", 6" ...)on each bar and then measure the thickness.

He may be seeing where you stated in your OP, that the bottom one was the 1500 lb one.

Seriously though, it does seem the bottom one is thicker, but that may just be the picture angle.

WMTire, I missed that completely or it didn't register, probably the latter.

I did. All the way down the bars. both sides and the trunions as well.
I checked the numbers stamped on them and they are different. All I can figure is maybe the composition of the steel. I have no idea.

Sure looks to me like the bottom bar is thicker all the way down to the hook.

Are the bars in the same position in both pics (top bar the same in both pics and bottom bar the same in both pics)?

They look swapped in the top pic and the bottom pic). If not, then I say the bottom bar is thicker to the naked eye.

Can you trace the numbers to the manufacturer?

your right. In the picture it does. Maybe I'm losing my mind. No that can't be it. That went missing some time ago.

The bar closest to my feet is the 1500# bar.

Contact the manufacturer. Often times they have a phone number or email address on their site. I'm betting that they'll tell you the difference.

I would guess that the difference is in the metallurgy. Perhaps different heat treatment.

I would imagine the metallurgy is the same and the heat treatment is the difference. Be pretty troublesome to keep track of metallurgy on the "pours" on no larger batches than are used by the manufacturer of the bars.

Might be as easy as they are stamped wrong, being you measured them both and they are the same. Give the manufacturer a call as the one post said.

I'm betting there is no difference other than a change in the stamp. I know of three companies that label the same bar that I rate at 1000# as a 1200# bar. We all buy the bar from the same manufacturer so it's pretty easy to figure out.

So the difference is in margin of safety. The 1200 lb bar has at least a 25% higher safety margin against failure.
