Sway bar

I have a pretty standard EZ hitch with a sway bar.
I have bent my small ball piece twice now. The first time was me just being stupid and forgetting to take it off before doing some backing.
The second time, I can't figure out why it bent. I didn't take any "jack knife" corners or backing at all.
When my truck and trailer are straight, I have maybe 5" of the bar extended.
Can't move the ball on the trailer any farther back, as it is already against the hooks (lack of better term).
Does anyone know if they sell a shorter sway bar that would give me more turning capacity or is the 5" about what it should be and I just did it to myself and didn't realize it? (I know I bent it, but was being careful)
