I picked up our 8329ss last week-end and told the dealer NOT to transfer the sway control. I have a Reese garden variety WD hitch and wanted to see how the trailer towed without the "sway control" and also did not want my rails turned to Swiss cheese (I am installing a Hensley in the next few weeks)
My fairly long trailer towed very very well without sway control. I do tow with an E350 van with very short overhang from the rear axle to the hitch and so that is part of it, but I think the towing characteristics of the 8329ss are pretty good.
I was led to try this after towing my last trailer (Starcraft Autum Ridge 266RKS) with the anti sway hooked up but with out the friction adjust tightened a couple of times with no ill effects.
I'm not advocating that everyone should tow without some form of anti-sway, but I generally think the friction style devices we all use are rubbish. Has anyone seen a trailer delivered with an anti-sway device or any WD device, for that matter, in use?

Side note-I took the anti sway trailer-side mount off my old trailer myself and the bolts used were in there very well after two years. No rust (it's California) just tight. they were also not 1/4 20. The Reese manual I have says that they are "Screw, Self Tapping 24-9 x 1",...so very studly screws indeed!

Just about impossible to get nuts on bolts inside the tubing. GR 9? Maybe GR 8, but still no way of getting nuts on them.

The bolts that came with mine were like they were made out of cast iron, and two of the four broke off on the tongue. I replaced them with steel and went another 80,000 miles with no problems after that.

Pilot holes were probably too small. Most have 6 bolts, never seen one with only 4, but no doubt the 4 bolters are available.

Question what CW did wrong?

There have been a ton of issues with CW locations around the country, but i can also say from first hand experience that most of the private dealers local to me are not much better, but i looked hard at your picture and in 300 miles i can not see how the holes in the mounting plate could be enlarged as much as they are.

I owned one of these sway controls 20 yrs ago and NEVER had a lick of issue with it other that using it so much it was about worn out when i traded the trailer in, but the sway control worked assume and could not tow the pop-up without it installed. I installed the whole thing from drilling the aframe holes to welding the adapter on the hitch and it never gave me any trouble.

Now i am very sorry this happen but again i do not see what CW did wrong?

They used 1/4" self tappers instead of the 3/8" sheet metal bolts that have to have a pilot hole drilled. Very shoddy!

Or just maybe you tried to back up with out removing the brake as required. Never had an issue with mine when I had it. Later RJD

Broken Sway Contol

I use that identical setup on. 28RKS Wildcat. GW usually around 9000-9200lbs. Have well over 10000 miles on the setup now....no issues. Used the supplied self tapping bolts with no issue.

The sway control ball mount had the 3/8 bolts in it when on my old trailer. Camping world technician lost them or just threw them away and used 1/4 20 tappers with tiny heads when reinstalling it. Probably didn't want to drill pilot holes for the correct bolts. Just drilled the tiny screws in and called it good.

I am with Mort & bareftn. What would possess them to use self tappers? Hardened bolts & equalizer is on my rig.
