Removing a friction sway controller is not "required". Any instructions I have ever seen tell you to use caution when in an extreme jackknife maneuver that you do not bottom out the unit....OR remove the sway controller.
I use a friction sway controller for 7 seasons with our minivan/popup combo. I never removed it until it was time to set up camp. I knew exactly how much a could swing each way, and never damaged anything.
