Every V8 gas truck I ever has never got better than 13-14 highway empty, or better than 8 towing. Now I have my largest truck ever, diesel dually, and get 12 towing and 20+ empty. That's real world. I'm sure most people who have owned both have similar results.

Diesel here is 20 cents a litre cheaper than gas. That is about $1 us our gallon. As far as maintenance I have a plan, cost $1000 for 4 years. In my mind that is pretty cheap.

i know for a fact most are lucky to get 11 mpg . i get 15 mpg not towing now that same diesel gets 22mpg . haven't seem it from any diesel owner i know .
I agree the extra torque is great the exhaust brake is awesome but the cost is higher . i change my oil for $25 . not $60. do i have to change the oil more often not really depends on the oil you use . longevity not really the 6.0 is a proven 300000 mile engine
I have a 2015 3500 Cummins diesel. I drove from Idaho to SOCAL, 1100 miles and got 21.5mpg with an empty truck, not towing anything. Towing my 5th wheel that has empty weight of 10,000+ (don't know gross as I haven't weighed it yet) I get 13.0+ from sea level up to 3500' with 8% grades. Just running around town I average 17mpg. And, there is NO COMPARISON when towing with a diesel verses gas.

These are just my opinions and, like feet, everyone has a couple, and some of them stink

Not really if you trade gas for gas it's all a wash unless your trying to trade gas for diesel. And now the new Chevy charge ya 8900 extra and if your using as a straight tow vehicle and not a daily driver it takes a long time to coup investment. Gas still cheaper and I do get close to 20mpg non tow with 4:10 gear. Later RJD.

It is always good when a member sees the light, repents, and walks the straight and narrow!

FWIW, and maybe I shouldn't post this, but I paid $53,000 for a Denali Dually. If you can find a Denali gas 1/2 ton for that (and you probably can, in that range), fine. But I did not spend $8,700 more.

And if I did, fine.........I didn't buy it because it was the cheapest truck. I bought a tool. And it does its job when other trucks can't. It's really that simple.

it must be coincidence that every commercial truck and all farm and construction equipment is diesel. Or maybe they all just have lots of money and want to show off

Rarely tow, load under 10K, mainly short trips around town - get a gasser.
Heavy tow, load over 10K, long trips in the hills - get a diesel.
It ain't rocket science.

Diesel Scare

I recently had an issue come up that was scary to say the least. We have a Sprinter Diesel based Solera motor home with about 10,000 miles. On our latest trip we had a check engine light show up on our way home. We brought the unit to Mercedes and were subsequently advised that we had "obviously put gasoline in the fuel tank" and had thousands of dollars in engine damage. After I protested furiously that it was not possible, I was told somebody would be in to evaluate my unit and test the fuel in three days. Subsequently I received a call to pick up my unit, at no cost, and was advised that there was a software problem, possibly from an update at the last service. I WAS RELIEVED !! While there I was advised about a M/B diesel sedan that was in for major engine work because the owner got a tank of mostly gasoline from a local diesel pump. I always try to buy fuel at major brand stations when on the road but the thought of losing my expensive engine because some careless refinery worker pushes the wrong button or hurried truck driver fills the wrong tank is troubling.

Keep renewing your warranty as long as you can. I have a 2005 F-350 with 109,000 miles and still under warranty. The 6.0 diesel design caused many problems, but thanks to the warranty none of the repairs cost me over $100. I still believe in the benefits of diesel. Wouldn't want a gasser pulling my 37' 5er.

I`ve noticed with my 16 ctd that I get the same mileage pulling 2500 pound or 12000 pounds. I avg 13.5 . Does that sound normal ?

Not all. We are going to v10 gas motors. Ford 6.0 and 6.4 diesels are only good for boat anchors. The 6.0 is so bad that ford paid out millions in class action claims. My personal vehicle is a ecoboost max tow. It tows my 6500lb trailer just fine over all terrains and gets 10 mpg towing, 16.2 around town and 21 or 22 on the road. With my wife driving it does a little better. Her foot must be smaller. If you are towing a monster tt or 5er, by all means get that diesel. If you are towing somethings under 7000lbs, a gasser properly equipped will do the jod

Of course the costs will be higher. When you're putting in 12 to 14 quarts of oil each time, and a more expensive filter, that alone if enough to make a difference. And then there's the DEF. As somebody else said, buy it at WalMart for a huge savings.

Having said that, I've never had any major costs with a 2006 Ford F350, a 2008 F350 and now a 2012 F350. But then I guess I don't drive them long enough to accrue expensive costs.

I'll stick with diesels. But then trying to tow a 14,000 fifth wheel would be pretty tough on a gas motor.

Is it just me or are some of these guys trying to make up for their shortcomings in other areas by bragging how badass their trucks are?
