Camp Gulf in Destin, FL...took this pic of two campers who unfortunately drew the short straws when checking in on their very pricey beach view campsite (both anchored the main beach access path from a crowded campground)! Yikes ,)

I am kinda crazy about the older campers anyway. I saw a couple of holiday ramblers, avions and old airstreams.

I always enjoy seeing how some people have fun. I was surprised at the number of tent campers. It was hot and there is no way I could do that but I am a more power to ya' type person anyway.

I have also seen tent campers that rigged AC units to ther tents before and a tent made for an AC unit.

Had one in 1981, one of the first 5er's Holiday Rambler made under the name of Alumalite. Biggest pc of junk I've seen. Inside was nice, running gear/frame/plumbing/etc was a POS. Towed just fine and was as safe or safer than the present lite wts.

Something's wrong with that picture. Where are the awning poles?

1981-manual awning, but it did get staked and tied down with rope and long stakes.

BTW, that awning was installed by one person. Guess who?

That is AWESOME, OC!
Always thought the Caminos and Rancheros would make great lite 5th wheel pullers.
Was there a kit for the gooseneck ball in the bed or was that a custom fab job?
Love the whitewalls!

Was what they call a "Disappearing hitch" 2-5/16" ball flipped down in a compartment. Hitch was part of the deal. It was supposed to have a hole cut in the bed to make it flush mounted. I wouldn't let them cut a 12" square hole in the bed of a new truck, so I made a 3"x3"x1/4" angle iron frame and bolted it all down to the bed. If you look close, also had a tonneau cover that completely enclosed the bed of the truck.

Last Labor Day a young couple pulled into the campsite across from us...in his Peterbilt! They camped in the sleeper all weekend. Had party lights strung across the windshield and everything. I'm sure it's been done before, we just found it amusing.

Old thread but I need to share.
Camping this past weekend with da wife and were sitting in our chairs and this other couple pulls in and right when they are going pass us the whole receiver falls out, digs into the ground and camper is bouncy bounce.
I am like whoa whoa whoa, then she jumps out of drivers seat, he jumps out of passenger seat and he says I cant believe i for got that. I asked how far did you guys come, he says about 20 miles. WOW, what luck I said, and gave a little lecture on what could have happened and next time dont be so careless. I was pissed off cause my family could have been behind this.
I asked for the pin as I helped hook it back up, they hand me a coupler pin. I was like no no, hitch pin. (more lecturing) Oh yeah, the coupler pin was missing too.

Sounds like he may have put the hitch pin in but forgot to put the retainer pin in place. While driving down the road the hitch pin fell out.

That's what I'm thinking. I can't imagine anyone going 20 feet much less 20 miles without the receiver pulling right out if there's no pin holding it in.

I experienced pretty much the same problem when chisel plowing and discing fields on the farm. The corn stalks would push the hair pin retainer clip out. The solution was to push the hair pin all the way in to the large loop.

He said these exact words. "I can not believe I forgot to put that hitch pin in"
