very true, however, with the new tow ratings being adjusted to lower numbers, everyone should really pay attention to what truck they're buying. With the new tow ratings today, the new 2500 or F250 won't tow many of the 5'ers out today and I see a lot of guys towing big 5'ers with the 2500 Diesels, and f250 diesels.
Example, my brother in laws 2011 2500 HD Duramax can tow more at the 5th wheel then I can with my '16 2500 Duramax.

Mid February I traded in my 2010 GMC 1500 (106k on the clock) in on a 2011 F250 Diesel with only 14k on it.
Loved the ride of my GMC. The Ford ride when compared to the GMC is allot rougher.
Towing. Can't even compare the two. The Diesel pulls so well that power wise it's like the trailer isn't there. I just did a 2800 mile trip pulling my TH. I could move over to the left and pass going uphill with ease. I could have kept with the flow of traffic if I wanted (I'm a slow down when pulling person).
The F250 will also be my "daily" driver. I'm retired. Most days I drive only a few miles. Hunting season/fishing season that ups a bit but I still stay local. So the rough ride is something I am willing to accept. I make a long trip in the winter (3k), a short trip in the Spring (300) and a 1100 mile trip in August every year.
If that GMC you looked at is priced in your range I would tell you to go for it.

The tundra would run circles around my work truck. And the stability didn't feel that much better to me wear I had to run out and get a 3/4. With the TT your are towing I would stick with your tundra. Now if you went bigger then yeah 3/4 would be better but I would go to a diesel. Everyone is always bashing on half tons even if they are towing a pop up. Not bashing on 3/4 tons but they have there place in your case I would say it's not needed.

Can't quite compare a 2009 Chevy 6.0 to a new Tundra. The new 6.0 is so much better and so much more fuel efficient and the ride is awesome and quiet. Go with the 3/4 ton. If chevy you will get 4:10 gear but it will tow like heck. I've kept up with diesels towing up long 5% grades and no issues. Generally get 9.5 mpg. towing. Later RJD
You did not mention what WDH you had but that can also make a difference in towing.

The new Chevy LML diesels in 3/4 or 1 ton, you can only get 3.73 gears......

On all the 6.6 duramax trucks ever produced in 2500 or 3500 trucks, 3.73 were and are the only available gears.
I believe the previous poster was referring to 6.0 gas engines with 4.10 gears

The money you pay extra for the diesel is for the 800,000 mile engine. Let's dee you get that from a gasser.

I used my buddies 3/4 ton Laramie mega cab diesel to pull my 6700 lb when loaded dbud (5960 dry) it was overkill for our camper. My wife and I have since upgraded from a Avalanche with a 7200 lb tow rating to a 2013 ram with the 5.7 hemi and a 8700 lb tow capacity.

Don't think average folks going to put that kind of mileage on a truck for towing or keep that long to to hit the mileage. Takes a long time to recoup $8200 for diesel option. Later RJD

That's what I was thinking in this case as well. It would be way overkill. I'm ok with that.
The temptation to go diesel in this case is just with this particular unit. It is priced equal to the used optioned out gassers. I'm more attracted to the power of the diesel though than I am to Nav, and heated seats or 4wd. Initial purchase price would be a wash compared to the local gas units. Also, this one is actually lower miles than those gassers too. I shouldn't have driven it. And my insurance would go up $1. That was a surprise. Now if I could just convince the CFO that non heated cloth seats are ok.

You get most of it if not all of it back when you sell it. Plus if its one of the "good " diesel engines, it will sell much quicker.

Just took first long trip in new 2500HD dmax which only had 401 miles when I started. Day trip was 331 miles mostly rural highways (50 mph zones) from VT to CT and back. According to trip odometer, I got 20.9 mpg. I don't think that was too bad as best I got in my 2012 Ram 1500 5.7L hemi was around 20mpg.
Looking forward to towing with this vehicle.

imo, if you are going to camp a lot, and there is always the possibility of going to a fiver, the pass on the 3/4 ton. Anyone who is shopping 3/4 ton trucks for towing purposes, should spend a couple hundred bucks more and get a 1 ton diesel. Had I done that to start with, I would have more $ in my bank account right now. I would be embarrassed to tell you my story of truck,... then camper,... then fiver,... then bigger truck,... then bigger camper,... then bigger truck. I usually make pretty good financial decisions, but I screwed the pooch on this one....ugh

My Diesel was $2,000 more. Not sure how much markup south of the border but in Canuckastan they are pretty close, buying a well equipped unit not a base model.

I just looked online at the dealer I just bought my dually from. A GMC 1500 1/2 ton loaded vs a 2500 loaded 3/4 ton is about $6,000 max MSRP. The 3/4 tons are pretty much same price as the dually's. In my experience there, they'll deal with both, but come off the HD's way more.........so the difference in price is not very much.
I own two trucks........a 1/2 ton and a 1 ton Dually. I had a 3/4 ton before the dually. There is no comparison in towing. It's a step ladder........up, up, up from one model to the next.
And with a fifth wheel, towing specs become just one factor.......Payload jumps in and bites you on those.......

I agree. But, for most people that own a diesel it's not about cost. it's about the trip and the pleasure of the drive. Whether or not I'll recoup my investment in the end is the least of my worries.

X2 on what Too Tall said...For me it was not about the cost it is the pleasure of the drive. Did I need a diesel to tow my 7700 lb trailer nope...I just wanted one. Had a 3/4 ton gasser prior to the diesel and will never look back. Added plus is diesel fuel is cheaper then gas here in Southern CA

I didn't get a diesel at first due to the price of diesel, now, 3 trucks later I finally got a diesel and wish I got this one first. It was listed as a 9k option with GMC but with all the discounts, etc. we got off of the truck, I paid the same amount for my 2500 as I did for my 2014 Chevy 1500 DBL Cab 6.2.
Though I haven't towed with it yet, anxious to tow with it
