Just towed with the new truck. Only about 50 miles. Three words.... night and day. That was the difference as far as ride and stability. As for power, as expected I feel I lost a little, but it's still adequate. I pushed it a little. Not letting it slow on hills and generally keeping it at 65. Only netted me about 8mpg. Overall, very happy with my decision.

Nice, congrats on the new one, sharp looking. I've had my 2500 for close to a month and haven't towed yet, I'm anxious for a free weekend so I can do test tow as well.

Glad you had a positive towing exp with the heavier truck. I felt the same way after moving to the 2500. The diffidence as you pointed out is night and day. I too went with gas for the 3/4 and feel it was the right choice for my needs and more than acceptable to pull my trailer.

Congrats on the new truck. You need to update your sig.

Now, an Edge Tuner will wake that motor and trans up a decent amount. The stock tune is CRAP.

Edge 85450 is you want all the gauges plus tuning and ability to read and clear codes, ect.

Edge 26040 for just a handheld tuner. Both will make the same power and tunes.

From the site on specs: I think Level 3 is towing tune.

POWER LEVEL 1: TRANSMISSION TUNING ONLY
POWER LEVEL 2: 5 HP & 5 LB-FT
POWER LEVEL 3: 12 HP & 12 LB-FT

I was actually looking at these. I like the canned programs. Is it snake oil or seat of the pants noticeable? I don't want to add any hard parts till the warranty is expired.

I can speak The truth on the Chevy because I had it on my 2006 6.0 gasser and it really woke it up. Especially about 4K. Tightens up the trranny shifts as well. The factory tunes are really mild.

My buddy had it on his 2004 Excursion v10 diesel and he got 2 more mpg not towing and averaged 1.1-1.2 more on towing. Doesn't sound like a lot but at 44 gallon fuel tank, did make a difference. It was peppier as well and didn't ping going up steep hills while towing as well.

I'd agree on the mpg, that while not much, even 1mpg is another 36 miles in my case. More about range than efficiency.

Thanks for the info.

So, I decided to pick up the Edge Tuner. I like gadgets what can I say. I set it up to view RPM and trans fluid temp. Empty with the 87 octane performance tune is really nice. Better MPG, and the truck is actually more fun to drive. Haven't tried the premium fuel tune.

I also towed about 250 miles with the towing tune. I probably should've towed first with the stock tune for a long distance as a good comparison, but I like gadgets. I can't not use it. Mileage was still pretty poor. Around 7-8 mpg overall for the trip. First half of trip trying to keep up with our friends in a class C maintaining 65(he was doing 70). As you can guess he got there long before me. Second half, same speed but with 15-20 mph headwinds. The power was definitely there in 5th to 3rd, but mileage suffered. Next trip, I'll take it easy. 62 mph and let it slow on hills to see what I can squeeze out of it. This trip I wanted to work it to see how it performed.

Again, though, the stability was fantastic. Big rigs, crosswinds, rough roads.... This truck handled much better with the trailer than my previous 1/2 ton. One hand on the wheel relaxed driving. Also, even when this engine revs, it's still pretty quiet compared to my Tundra.
