Thunk
I have a Ford 250 Super Duty with a Reese 16k 5th Wheel hitch towing a Cardinal 30 LE RK. Sometimes there is a thunk when I take off or stop. Sometimes there is no noise at all. I always hook up the same way. So I am not sure what would cause the noise. Is there a little room for play with the kingpin and is that causing the thunk? Just want to make sure all is okay!

I have the same hitch and had the same problem. I ended up making some 0.075" thick steel shims and fit under the 4 legs of the hitch. It now requires driving the pins in with a dead blow hammer, but no more thunk.
The shims are long enough and wide enough that the entire leg sits on the shim and have rectangular slots for the pin brackets.

can you post a pic of your mounting rails ?
mine has adjustable pin slots to tighten .
I wonder if your guys does to ?

Okay, so you think the play is under the legs and not on the kingpin?? Never would have thought of that. Where did you get the shims? Thanks for your help

I have a Curt 16k and it does the same thing. It's not the hitch that I wanted, but I needed one in a hurry when I bought my rig. I get some clunking in the head pivot, king pin, and from the rails. Going to get a new hitch this winter before our FL trip in March. Still not sure on which one just yet.

GIVE ME A BREAK Ron, do you think I would have taken the time to make shims if they were adjustable??? The pin brackets are welded solid to the legs and they have 19/32"dia holes for 9/16' dia pins.

Just keep in mind, when it thunks or whatever, it is wearing something out and putting a shock load into whatever is thunking. Thunk about it!

I doubt the jealous part, mine is silent, installed and works just fine. PLUS, it, the truck it sits in and the trailer that hooks to it are all free & clear.

My 16K Reese slider has a tendency the 'thunk' (starting to love that word!) but only when I am traveling slowly; through a town with lots of stop 'n goes, for eg.
I am running a Curt Discovery controller set at 3.0 and 3.0 for hiway. If I back the secondary off to 1.0 or so at the first stop, there is no problem and the thunk is gone and stops are smooth. I repeated this several times in a WalMart lot and now do it habitually as we encounter the speed zones coming into a town.
Although this works for the 'thunk' when braking, I like the idea of shims better.
dunnnc, did you come up with your shim thickness through trial and error, or did you discover a way to measure the gap beforehand???
