Tire blowout - Dual Axle - How to know

This is my first venture into hauling a dual axle trailer. I've been fortunate to never have a tire blowout in my non-towing regular day to day so far, only a slow leak here and there. So what can I expect when traveling highway speeds and this occurs? It is something that I will know right away? I've seen big trucks going down the road with a tire off a wheel and that is why I ask. Seen two of them in the past year. They were either oblivious to the fact that they were down a tire or just wanted to make it to their destination and didn't care.

You may hear it, you may not first clue may be parts of your trailer falling off or someone trying to stop/tell you.

Many times people have a (Flat/blowout) and never know it on a dual axle trailer! Having (TPMS) helps to know. Youroo!!

Most of the time you will see chunks of rubber flying off. I have thrown countless treads or as I call em "gator backs", but never actually "blown" a tire. (My inner carcass was still holding plenty of air, just the outer tread and belt came off. )
I've always felt a slight vibration, like hitting the rumble strip on the interstate, or a few bumps like on a washboard road. Then a few seconds later rubber shrapnel flying and quite visable out my side mirrors.
I think most of the time if you keep your eye in your mirrors, you will be able to catch it before your tire is completely off the rim, on a true blowout.

Just make sure you have a jack and lug wrench or impact, and most lugs on trailers are 3/4" or 13/16"- just fyi

Very good info so far... As a sidenote, anyone with Nitrogen filled tires here? Any plus/minus to them besides the obvious air pressure stability?

I"ve had two over the years and both times it was brought to my attention by other drivers, I felt nothing but when you see it you sure wonder why you did not feel something so destructive happen.

Thats about all I've noticed. My last 5er was about a year old when it went away (totaled from hail) and I never had to add any air to the tires, they stayed the same pressure that whole year.

HAHA! So true! Now if there were only run-flat 14" trailer tires...or maybe there are...I'll need to Google that.

Tire aid, genset and an electric impact wrench with 3/4" or 17mm scockets.

10-15 min to change it out.
