To add airbags or not???

Anybody have airbags added to their tow vehicle? I just bought a stock 2008 Dodge cummins quadcab 4x4 auto. I will be towing a Sandpiper 365 saq fifth wheel weight loaded around 14000 lbs. give or take. Looking at adding some airbags with compressor and dual gauges. Any info would be appreciated. I have looked at Goodyear and Firestone ride rites.

I've installed Air Ride 5000's without the on-board compressor on my previous two tow vehicles. If you're handy with tools, it a fairly easy job.

Another option would be Timbrens SES. Do you know what your loaded pin weight is?

My Parents had a 99 Dodge 2500 Diesel (single rear wheels) and towed a 5th wheel and upgraded the rear suspension and added Air Bags - I think they bought the Firestone ride rites with the single gauge and single switch - If I remember correctly the reason why they added the air bags was becuase the pin box was causing the front end to be high - once they did the air bags they never had an issue - they have since gone away from 5th wheels and upgraded to a 40 foot Motorhome.

I think the only issue they had was one of the valves leaked but once fixed they never had an issue after that

If you need more info I can ask my father since he has used them if you do not get many responses here to your question about the airbags

He also upgraded the tires to Load Range E also

Gross weight is 14060 lbs.

Personally, I'd go with the airbags...wouldn't have to go with the on-board compressor as it adds a lot of expense.

The numbers you give mean a cargo carrying capacity of only 1700 lbs...that can't be right. A camper that size would usually have a CCC of over 3000 lbs. Either way, 14000 lbs loaded is a reaonable number. That would put your pin weight around 2800 lbs assuming 20% pin weight.

I have airbags on my truck and wouldn't be without them. They make a huge difference. I don't have the compressor, just air them up when needed. They are very simple to install.

Very simple to install with the right tools and right equipment. I would have killed to have a lift in my driveway. I installed the Firestone Ride-Rite's on my last truck and my current truck. But even without a lift, it was not a bad job. My current truck I happened to get a pretty good deal on the Airlift Wireless Remote Compressor. What a dream. I can sit in the cab of my truck, even moving down the road, and add or let air out. Very cool. The air pressure is read right on the remote. It does add quite a bit to the expense (unless you can find a good deal like I did), but it does give you other options as well. Like adding an air tank and being able to air up tires, toys, etc. Or just tee off a connection and have the ability to connect an air hose direct to the compressor. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend it. Either way, airbags will be a great addition to your truck...especially with that big a 5er.

When I had (1500 4x4 GMC/Chevy) trucks they were OK for light trailers. Then I started to buy (Z-71 1500) trucks,same trailers,then I HAD to put air bags (Firestone) on them to level and retain the ride without bounce. YesI had W/D and SC on all trucks.One fill location for both bags.Used a small (12 V) to fill them and campers bikes. 15 psi at all times 60 when towing. I sold the bags to someone on this site, he loves them. Youroo!!

What are you trying to accomplish?

Air bags will level the TV but nothing more. What version of the 08 Dodge do you have, 3/4 or 1 ton?

I installed Firestone air bags to keep the headlights from shining into the oncoming traffic. I only need 10 psi to keep the truck level. They do make the ride nicer, too, at least when I'm towing.

I have air bags on my F150. With an ATV in the box and a trailer with 500lb hitch weight they pump up in seconds to level the load and the truck rides smooth. I went with single inflator (branches to the two sides). I was told that if you have a camper you may want to go with an inflator for both sides because campers often have uneven weights and you can level your load easier. For a trailer you only need one. The extra cost of adding an on board compressor and switch is not necessary although it is convenient.

I have ride rites with two inflators. The compressor didn't make much sense to me as I know where I want the air pressure to be. I carry the small air compressor for my trim nailers but that's more for bike tires and stuff. One time I had to unhook on the side of a street and after leveling the camper the hitch was cocked and stuck, no problem, deflate one side to help straighten it out. They also make my ride much more comfortable.

I used the airlifts. Makes up for the 2500 Dodges not having overloads.
