Tongue weight of a Silverado 2500

I recently purchased a 2010 Forest River Rockwood Freedom 282txr thinking my f150 can tow it. Well, with out the atv's loaded it is well within the limits of the truck.

However loading up 1500lbs of atv and my tongue weight is 1020lbs. Hitch is only rated for 10000lbs and my trailer was not loaded for camping, it was dry with the atv's.

None the less, I am pretty upset at the salesman, though I don't blame him, my responsibility to check it all out before driving off the lot.

So, I want to make sure the next truck I buy I am not left hanging. I am looking at. 2004 Silverado Duramax. I have been looking, unsuccessfully, for the tongue weight capacity of the Silverado. It's payload seems sufficient to handle the younger weight, but I have yet to find the hitch rating.

Any 2004 Duramax owners out there?

A.

just a quick google search turns up '04 2500 Silverado...

curb weight less than 6,000#

GVWR is 9,600#

Payload is the difference of the two or about 3,600# which is passengers, cargo and tongue weight added together.

A WDH may not be required for short hauls, but would be a good addition to haul all your trailer.

Make sure the hitch is not rust compromised on this older Silverado...

good luck on your purchase

@seadog, "tongue" weight. Damn autocorrect.

I understand cargo capacity, thanks for pointing that out though.

Maybe I didn't use the right terms. By looking for the tongue weight I guess I am trying to figure out what the hitch rating is?

Check the receiver itself. My Duramax has the max tongue weight ( with and without WDH) stamped on the receiver.

depends on the hitch size on the truck... yours should be 2 1/2 inches (Class V) but you have to measure... hope this helps
explanation below:

Class III

These versatile trailer hitch receivers are typically installed on pickup trucks, minivans, and full-size SUVs. Class III hitches use a 2" x 2" receiver tube for the ball mount, and they are rated for towing a gross trailer weight ranging from 3,500 to 6,000 lbs and a tongue weight ranging from 350 to 600 lbs. These are usually used for towing mid-sized campers, utility trailers, and mid-sized boats.

Opening Sizes GTW Tongue Weight Capacity
2" 3,500-6,000 lbs 350-600 lbs
Class IV

These heavy-duty hitch receivers are typically installed on heavy-duty pickup trucks and large SUVs. Class IV hitches use a 2" x 2" receiver tube for the ball mount, and they are rated for towing a gross trailer weight ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 lbs and a tongue weight ranging from 600 to 1,000 lbs. These are usually used for towing heavy loads, including large campers, boats, and toy haulers.

Opening Sizes GTW Tongue Weight Capacity
2" 6,000-10,000 lbs 600-1,000 lbs
Class V

These hitch receivers are the heaviest-duty models that can be installed on the rear of a tow vehicle, and they’re typically mounted on heavy-duty and commercial trucks. Class V hitches use a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" receiver tube for the ball mount, and they are rated for towing a gross trailer weight of more than 10,000 lbs and a tongue weight ranging from 1,000 to 1,200 lbs. These are usually used for towing heavy loads including full-sized campers, large boats, and equipment trailers of all sizes.

Opening Sizes GTW Tongue Weight Capacity
2-1/2" Over 10,000 lbs 1,000-1,200 lbs

to be more specific about 2004 Silverado 2500, I found this page... talks about max tongue wt of 500# and with WDH 1060# (Under Adv Tech Data...

https://www.driverside.com/specs/che...04-4101-9150-0

I know a friends 2015 RAM 2500 HD has the class V ( 2.5 inch hitch size) hitch on it... so I think the year matters

I wouldn't trust those numbers....find it hard to believe an 04 Silverado Duramax would weigh that little and have a payload of 3600#...the newer versions with increased payloads don't even have close to that for payload...my 2016 2500 with the Duramax has a payload of 2350...no way the 04 has 1300# on it.

It really depends on the truck - our was 1000/10,000 WDH so we swapped for a https://www.etrailer.com/hitch-2004_...-16000_lbs_GTW -- a simple fix IMHO
