Improper tow vehicle, hitch set up, load distribution, and speed. Wind did not play a part here. Sway control, or loss of control, the only way to come out is apply trailer brakes only, or speed up. This guy needed a heavier tow vehicle, or load the tow vehicle heavy to avoid this crash.

Never took his foot off the gas. Combination of factors, all covered by post above. One of those "Hold my beer...watch this ! " type of drivers ? Just never know who's in front of you.

Looks like he made a sudden move to start with. Not enough to have caused that kind of sway unless he didn't have any kind of sway control on it...couldn't tell. Never once saw the trailer brakes come on either. I can't believe he never tried to slow it down, which makes me wonder if he either didn't have a brake controller on it or he got disconnected. He had enough truck if he was set up correctly, I just don't think he had everything he should have had or didn't know how to use it.
My vote is too fast for the amount of camper and his competency level (equipment and use thereof).

No wind here that day and if you look at it again, he started looking after a black car went flying past. No where near set up correctly.

The guy behind him appeared to be filming with his phone. Which leads me to believe he had a pretty good idea that this was the inevitable outcome based on things he had seen before pulling out his phone.

I would say that is a logical deduction. There was probably no sway control and the rig had been swaying down the highway. That is probably what led the vehicle behind to start filming.

Yup, he had a marginal setup and the black (Ford Edge?) crossover suv that blew past him on the left induced the sway that lead to the mishap.
Goes to show how quickly things can turn ugly.

Agree. Trailer looks way too big for an SUV.

Inexperienced driver wrong hitch set up to light of a tow vechiel.
This is why I support a endorsement to tow a trailer

For him not to hit his brakes at all (at least no brake light indication) he must have been dealing with this sway for many miles and kind of ignored it. Probably improperly loaded trailer, overload trailer, low tire pressures on trailer and tow vehicle, no sway bar, etc.

Unfortunately, based on what I see on the road each day during my 120 mile commute, there are more improperly setup trailers than properly set up ones. I'm not surprised that we don't see this more often. Can't tell you how many bumper setups I see without even a WDH and/or the most basic friction anti-sway bar. Most folks I see don't even put a lock pin in the hitch to prevent it from accidentally popping open.
Did this guy have a brake controller? If so, he was absolutely cluless as to the appropriate measure to take when sway first started. If he did have a brake controller, I'm pretty sure he didn't know it could be applied manually and some rv tech probably set up the gain initially to make things idiot proof.
My philosophy is that if you don't have basic mechanical sense and abilities, you shouldn't be towing a camper. Problem is when I see a bad WDH setup that doesn't do anything, I get the usual response, "that's how my RV dealership set it up." Folks don't know understand or want to learn how anything works and rely too much on other's to do things for them and this is the result.
Drew
PS I'm frustrated as you obviously can tell. A neighbor bought a new toyhauler and I asked if he did a thorough PDI. He said the dealer took care of all of that. I ended up wasted a full day off fixing all of the crap that that should have been done on a PDI on his camper. His 2 year extended warranty is pretty much worthless since he bought it out of state and no local dealership has any openings until after camping season is over to look at this camper. Oh, he doesn't have a weight distributing hitch either because the RV dealer told him he doesn't need one on his bumper pull because he tows it with a 3/4 ton truck.

Correct set-up is key, and they didn't have that! At-least nobody looked to be hurt and no other cars involved.

They don't understand, its not rocket science. Dig out the hitch install instructions, read them and do what they say. Met a camper in Florida with a new Rt and the tv was low in the rear. She got the instructions for the hitch and we proceeded to correctly set it up. She was surprised how easy it was.
