Tow/Haul

When you tow your TT or 5th wheeler do you engage tow/haul on your truck?

Every single time. On our 2009 F150 it holds the shift points longer and also activates downshifting on grades by tapping the brakes. there seems to be less hunting in the transmission. i figure that the engineers are a lot smarter than me and put it there for a reason so i had better use it. plus, it tows like crap without it engaged.

I changes the shift points but I like it to use the engine braking when it downshifts when you apply your brake on a downgrade. Of course in Florida you don't have a chance to experience that but it will do it if you brake hard on the level also.

X2, that's exactly why I use mine. Towed once when I forgot to engage it and it was a terrible pull until I realized my mistake.

I use it. For my Silverado, using it is recommended when total weight is more than 75% of max gross combined weight.

I use it, lesson learned years ago. It might be different with newer transmissions but years ago I was told tow/haul or the old O/D off, turned the overdrive part of the torque converter off. Leaving it on caused the torque converter to shift excessively causing heat build up and damages transmission when towing.

Yes, always. Had an older truck that was 3 spd with overdrive and ran in overdrive. Our 400 mile trip ended at 90 miles when the transmission boiled out.

Every time...before I put it in gear. Just a habit I started with our 2010 F250 and continue today with our 2017 F-350...for all the reasons given previously.

Yes! As mentioned Tow/Haul changes shift points and assists with braking on down grades. Save your brakes, use tow/haul.

I guess I'm the contrary one, an say NO, never used it. We have plenty of truck for the load, and engine braking if needed.

Tow/Haul causes high engine revs when not needed. I may only use it when at steep inclines starting out, but that's what 6 speed transmissions are for, unless you're heavily loaded.

Always tow in tow/haul, very helpful on steep down grades.

I use it religiously. I find that even though it rev's higher with higher rpm shift points that my EGTs are lower which I feel is better for turbo versus higher engine revs.

I often use it driving unloaded in high mountain areas because it does a great job maintaining speed down the steeps.

If I'm towing or hauling, I use the Tow/Haul function.
The exact function differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and from year to year for the same manufacturer.

We used it when driving through the west on a 35 day trip (Glacier, Rushmore, Badlands, Yellowstone, Park City, Colorado). Lots of elevation change and a couple steep downhill sections (8% grade). It worked great. However, when hauling across South Dakota, I just kept the truck in normal mode and it worked fine also.
