going nearly 30 inches shorter in wheel base will give you horrible handling. As a master tech, he should be able to understand how the size of the vehicle relates to ride and handling.

That wasn't nice

For our family of 5 & 1 large dog we spent a lot of time looking at 10 year-old 3/4 ton SUVs (under $20K) but they had older engine/tranny tech & therefore very poor mpg... The older V8 & V10 gas engines, especially w/4 speed transmissions, were real guzzlers & the Ford 6.0 diesel has issues...

In 2013 we found a 2 year-old 2011 Ram 2500 CC w/5.7 Hemi for $14K, added a like-new fiberglass cap from CL for $500 & securely fasten the dog's crate under the cap. With windows cracked she gets plenty of air and she doesn't become a projectile if we stop fast... We have the stock interior, so we have seatbelts for (6)... The best thing is our truck has newer engine/tranny tech & gets 16-17 mpg on my daily commute and NO RUST (for a $14K 3/4 ton vehicle).

Our 6,500 (empty) TT w/empty tongue of 650 becomes 8,200/1200 ready-to-camp. Our payload of 3,000 means we can load our gear where it fits best. I'm very pleased we have a much newer 3/4 truck vs. an outdated SUV...

wasn't meant to be mean or degrading in any way. Sorry if it came across as such. Just saying that with a strong knowledge of vehicles and how they work, that it would be kind of obvious that a longer wheelbase is a huge plus when towing

I have to disclose that hubby is an ASE master certified tech. The wheelbase on our silverado is 143.5, while the escalade is only 116".

This whole idea is opposed to me trading in my lovely sport sedan for something like a tahoe/suburban etc
You won't have the room you want if you're getting the short Escalade. We have Yukon XL Denali (130" WB) and can fit 4 people easily, along with 2 dogs (140lb & 90lb), plus gear. It also has the 6.2L and AWD. Our Friends have a an Escalade and there is no way our dogs will fit. BTW, I love the CTS-V!

I'm researching the Nissan NV 3500, wheelbase=146.1, 317hp/385 lb-ft, 3:54 gearing, tow rating = 8700, payoad = 3535. Reconfigurable seating from 2-12 passengers.

So far I can't find epa mpg rating. I did find one post that said it's horrible, 7/8 mpg, but I find that hard to believe. *see below

Ugly as sin, but with the truck nose, engine maintenance and repair should be cheaper and easier than a standard van configuration. And also makes for a longer wheelbase.

Plus I like the utility and convenience of the sliding van door.

This truck begs for the introduction of a light-duty diesel.
However, it seems to me the front-on view of the NV and Titan are the same, and therefore the wind resistance should be the same. The only difference to economy should be the weight difference.

What do you think?

Hmmm... I'll have to look into this. I am not a fan of vans of any sort but it's certainly something the husband has mentioned a time or 20. Thanks for the suggestion

Nissan has reliability issues so check the ratings. I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 and 5.3L and I wish I had gotten the 6L engine. It has been a great truck and tows wonderful with the integrated trailer brake controller and towing package. Our tow is heavier so you would be safe with a 1500, 2500, or Tahoe/Suburban. There should be plenty of used ones now since they upgraded the towing capacity in 2014.

JD Powers rates Titan reliability as average. I've always felt Powers was partial to GM, though.

Also found this on the '15 Titan:

Well I'd say stick with what ya have if it's towing ok and just put a topper on the bed and a rubber boot between cab and shell good to go with the dogs in the back. Later RJD

Thanks all. My husband understands the wheelbase issue. He test drove the escalade and it didn't fit what he wanted anyways. The cheapest, most efficient route would be to put a cap on the silverado. We have 3 dogs, so can't fit 3 large crates in the back but they weren't in their crates inside the truck either. We'd have to modify the rear window to a slide window to allow air/heat into the topper too.

We love our Silverado. It's well built, and my husband has it tuned transmission and motor wise right where he likes it. He hates the look with the topper, and I don't blame him. Either I'll have to cave and get an SUV with a longer wheelbase or he'll end up caving and getting a topper installed.

And I didn't take offense to the "master tech" comment. He's an automotive guru, you'd be hard pressed to find a way to insult that.

Nissan has quality issues. I have a Nissan Frontier as my daily driver, granted it's got 112k miles on it now but the rear main has leaked since 60k miles and it's a $1400 fix. Not to mention all the little stuff, I ended up buying a code scanner to have in my garage because the check engine light is on so much. But i am only into the truck (crew cab, 4x4) for $5000 and it still books for $9000 so I can justify fixing it without getting too upset.

My former boss has a Titan and he hasn't had much better luck with his 5.6L.
