Twisting chains lowers the shear strength. It might not matter much on a light pop-up but a large unit could shear G43 grade chains that are twisted enough to shorten them. Use a small diameter wire tie two links together creating a loop to shorten chains. When needed wire will break, chains will function as normal. A slight twist in the chain does not affect strength you would be challenged to get a very long chain perfectly straight.

Very interesting fact that I had never heard before. I assume a tie wrap could be used as an alternative the wire?
