Towable Dinghy

About 7 weeks ago my wife and I brought home our new 2016 Forester 3011DS. We are now looking into getting a towable vehicle. The 2016 Guide to Dinghy Towing that came in the April issue of Motorhome magazine has been helpful, in general. I am writing to ask what others are towing behind a similar RV that is on a Ford E450 chassis with a V10 engine and would you recommend it. Thank you in advance.

JerJ,

I have basically the same vehicle, a 2016 Sunseeker 3010DS and tow a 2007 Honda CRV with absolutely no problems. It weighs about 3400 lbs. Another friend has a 2016 Leprechaun similar size that pulls a 2014 Honda CRV, which is a four wheel drive and is a little heavier - again he has no problems. Unfortunately, CRVs from 2015 on are no longer flat-towable. My friend found a nice 2014 because of that. Your Forester and my Sunseeker are both rated for 7500 lb pulling although I'm not sure I'd want to go that high. I pulled my toad to Alaska and back with no problems last summer.

If you're comfortable driving a manual, there are lots of choices. We wanted an automatic, so chose the Ford Focus. It weighs 4,000 lbs and is an easy tow. We've towed it from Florida to Washington state with no problems at all.

If you want simple and light weight try a Fiat 500 standard shift. Weight is about 2400 lbs no mods needed.

we traded our 2012 manual 6 speed Chevy Cruze to a 2015 Ford Taurus fully loaded and weighs in at 3900lbs but you have room for guest and driving in comfort.
