Towing a Suburban

I have a new Georgetown 364TS ordered. I will be purchasing a tow dolly (not sure what brand/model yet). Most trips we will be either not pulling a toad, or pulling my Ford Escape. On some trips though I'd like to pull our Chevy Suburban (so we have enough seating for all 4 kids to go out and about).

The hitch on the Georgetown is for 5,000 pounds... but I'm beyond confused as to what that really means.

So the question is this - how do I figure out if I can safely town the suburban? What's the math formula?

thanks much.

absolutely not. The hitch is rated for 5000. The actual tow capacity is either that or less. the Suburban is way more than that, not including the tow dolly

Thanks. So the 5,000 pounds means that "everything it tows (Tow Dolly + Vehicle) cannot weight more than 5,000 pounds" and has nothing directly to do with the downward weight on the hitch itself. (And I've seen other places that say "if it says 5,000 pounds, to be safe you should stay more like 3,500 to 3,800 as a max. I just wasn't sure if that was actual weight, or downward weight on the hitch or what.)

Thanks again so much for clarifying.

5000 lbs it the hitch rating. Actual vehicle tow rating will be less. The tongue weight, or downward weight, on a 5000 lb hitch is typically 500 lbs.
