Towing a trailer behind a 5th wheel trailer
Has anyone done this?
Do you need a special license?
How difficult is it?
I passed a truck pulling a travel trailer 5th wheel that had another trailer off the back pulling a quad. It was a real long set up and he was towing really well.
What are the pros and cons of doing this?
Backing up would be a pain and the smaller trailer would be impossible to see from your tow rig.
Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Pulling tandem might be illegal in your state. Some will, some won't allow it. As far as pulling, tandem rigs pull fine, they are a little nerve racking. Better check local laws before trying it.

Oh, and there is no backing up. Just don't get in a position that you have to, or you will do some unhooking and re positioning.

Has been addressed several times but a few things to consider
1. Can your fifth wheels frame withstand the extra weight, all can not. 2. Some states have length restrictions, 3. In some states it is not legal & you may have to leave the second trailer behind...... So alot to consider....... & homework to do before it is attempted.

Had a guy pulling a DVR, pulling a cargo trailer w/Trike camped with us at Hampton, ILL. He just stopped disconnected the cargo trailer, then found his spot, backed the 5r in leveled, disconnected, Pulled his cargo trailer around. Looked like he had been doing it for a while. He told us he does it all the time. Parked his F-450, took the Trike off and drove off....

See my profile picture. It is legal in Louisiana with length restrictions. As stated above, make sure your camper frame can support pulling tandem and I would recommend having a trailer shop or fabrication shop install the hitch. I would not recommend attaching a hitch directly to your bumper without being reinforced.

No experiance myself doing it but recalled an article I read not long ago on the subject. This is not to say it is or is not safe, you need to be compfortable doing it as I honestly do not get how a utility trailer on the back could cause this. Panic I think would be a higher contributor.

I've seen people pull a boat behind a RV trailer before. If you plan to pull an additional trailer you need to also check on road restrictions. May be legal in the state you want to travel but not on all highways. Kind of like in New York and Kansas commercial haulers can pull triples on the interstates but have to break it down as soon as the leave the interstate/thruway. There may be other states that allow it but I only know of those two.

Maybe you could use something like this:

This one has a single wheel. I've seen pics of a 2-wheeled version, but couldn't find it.

Apparently it is legal in Minnesota. I had a diesel/5er pulling a huge boat pass me at 85 mph a couple of years ago. Yeah, I clocked his speed. But I bet 85 mph isn't legal!

The restrictions are strange. Some states are yes, some are yes with a length limits (65ft for the most part) while some are yes for non residents passing through and some are just no.
You can click on this map by state and check.

I've pulled 5er in IL for over twenty years First thing you do is call ISP and get a solid answer. As it will change from city to city and county. They are changing the laws in IL all the time. Like we used to have to get our trucks inspected once a year than they did away with it, now I buy a new truck 2014 and you best know the weigh restrictions with the new truck I can't use B-truck plates must have D plates and get truck tested twice a year or maybe pay a big fine. As far as I know the total length truck and any trailers 60 ft. I've talked to people who got ticketed for more than one trailer in IL.

Pulling boats or light trailers might be possible behind some 5th wheels and may even be legal in some areas. Unless you have a 2500 or larger vehicle you are at risk for stability and stopping and I don't know of a trailer that is designed to pull a thing behind it legally.

I have done it myself, I have a camera in the rear window of the TT so I can see the boat back there. Pulls really well.
