towing a wildwood 26bh with a ford flex

We are thinking about trading in our tent trailer for a 2011 wildwood 26bh. I know it is very close to our max towing of 4500 but just wondered if you guys had an opinion

Welcome to the forums!

I'm assuming that you're looking at a Wildwood X'Lite 26BH. To answer your question, the dry ship weight of the camper is listed as 4313#...the actual weight will be probably 300 to 400# more. With your Flex tow limit of 4500#, this isn't at all doable. The camper loaded for camping will be closer to 5800#.

Sorry, but I'd suggest that you look at smaller campers with a max GVWR of 4500# if you're intent on towing with the Flex.

you need to read more about towing specs.

first, that trailer is nearly 30'!!
second, your Flex's 4500lbs. tow capacity is with only a 150lb. driver in it. any additional passengers or cargo, lower the 4500 by its weight, including the WDH's weight.

the trailer has a fictional "dry" weight of 4050lbs. this does NOT include the weight of so-called "options" that nearly all trailers have, such as:

awning, oven, a/c, spare tire, microwave and so on. so, a ballpark number would be to add 400lbs. to the "dry" weight, to get the actual weight from the factory. so, expect it to weigh very close to your 4500 max.

now, you still have to add the weight of the battery, propane and water before you even try to add the weight of the cargo.

third, the "dry" hitch weight of 410lbs. will easily be over the Flex's max tongue weight when loaded for camping.

bottom line: too long of a trailer, too heavy of a trailer and too much hitch weight.

there is other stuff to consider too

trailer weight is just one part of the total equation(you're over by the way)

the other factors are handling, braking and engine power

dragging 4000 lbs plus up a long hill takes a lot of power as does towing into any kind of head wind
