Towing Capacity
Looking to upgrade to a 2019 FR 5th wheel. Dry weight is 8800lbs. Towing with a Toyo Tundra 1/2 ton, 10,500 towing capacity.
Thoughts?

And probably not a 5th-wheeler.

When talking 5th wheels and 1/2 tons, you start with PIN weight, not towing weight.
Most of 1/2 tons can tow smaller 5th wheels but don't have enough payload for the loaded pin weight.
What's the trailer's pin weight or what make and model are you talking about?

Pretty sure you’re going to find you have the wrong pickup truck for upgrading....if you want to do this safely anyway.

Wondering what you are upgrading from, and what are your towing experiences?
This is a good time of year to buy a 3/4 ton or larger. This 5er upgrade may just be a step to something larger anyway...

If the dry weight is 8800, you will be at or over the 10k limit of the truck pretty easily. Personally, I wouldn't tow a 5th wheel with a half ton even though our Wildcat is "half ton rated".

The OP is asking about a 1/2 ton gas Tundra, not a 1 ton diesel DRW.

I always use trailer gross weight, not empty weight, when determining a tow vehicle. Figure on 15-20% of gross weight on the pin. The numbers you stated are not going to work. You need a bigger truck or lighter trailer.

Since the trailer in question is *** SECRET ***  I'd figure on about 2000 pounds of cargo which seems typical for this type trailer. This bumps the trailer loaded weight to 10,800 pounds, well in excess of the maximum towing capacity of the little truck and not going into the truck's rear axle carrying capacity at this point.
My two personal rules of thumb for towing are the 1000 Pound Rule and the One Ton Rule which prescribe the trailer must weigh 1000 or 2000 pounds less than the maximum towing capacity of the truck. Since the truck is already on hand this means no more than 9500 pounds for the fully loaded trailer and preferably no more than 8500 pounds. Going the other way the math is just simple and for this trailer I'd personally want a max towing capacity of 12,800 pounds. The Ford F150 properly equipped just misses this capacity but at 12,200 pounds meets the 1000 Pound Rule. Otherwise you're into Super Duty level trucks and probably diesels.

You meet my 1000 pound rule now, but not the One Ton Rule. I don't have any fun towing near the max rating of my truck. Overkill is sometimes "needlessly" expensive but always works.
Fixing (as we say in Virginia) to start putting our Roo away for the winter. Weather will remain camp-able (if that's a word) but work schedules get in the way.

Towing capacity would be the least of my worries. Weight carrying capacity of the truck is the real issue: gross trailer weight times 20% equals pin weight more or less, plus the the weight of passengers, 5th wheel hitch and other cargo in and on the truck. I'm pretty sure that puts you in (at least) 3/4 ton if not 1 ton territory.

Yep. You definitely want to get the right tool for the job. 3/4 or 1 ton trucks are made for this. 1/2 tons are great trucks, but not for pulling a 5th wheel. Keep us posted on what you decide.
