Towing Capacity

2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 Extended Cab 4.8L V8 with "towing package".
Looking at used toy haulers for me, wife & motorcycle.
Find conflicting data on my towing capacity. Truck manual shows
5800-6800 Lbs. depending on rear end ratio; have read higher elsewhere.
Can anyone anyone help to narrow it down?
Will just be us 2, cat & 850-Lb. bike rig plus gear.
Thanks in advance...Hobbs

you are gonna want a bigger truck. I used to tow with 4.8l as well. I had a 4500 pound trailer.

^^^^ Agreed! Most loaded toy haulers are more than that.

Thanks all! Label shows:
GVWR: 6800-Lbs
GAWR Front: 3600-Lbs.
GAWR RR: 3950-Lbs.
I looked up what these mean, but still not sure of the maximum towing weight.
Help & Thanks...Hobbs

The manual says 6800 lbs max. it doesn't matter what you read else where, that's the most you can tow. Now, subtract your bike weight, bike gear and don't forgot all the stuff you will need in the camper for you. That gives you about 5000 lbs for a trailer that can haul your bike.

Again, having hauled with that engine, I think you are going to be VERY unhappy with its performance. Additionally, you are going to be close to MAXED out on your Towing

You need to look up the GCWR or gross combined weight rating. That number minus the truck, passengers, fuel and whatever else is in the truck will be the max you can tow. You want to make sure you do not go over your GVW with you tongue weight on the trailer also. For example my truck has a 20k GCWR. The truck loaded is 7k. My tow max is 13k. I have a 8800gvw which allows for an 1800 hitch weight on a fifth wheel hitch. With a bumper pull usually max hitch weight is 1k.

Uncle Roy: There should be a sticker in your glove box that lists all the stuff your truck came with via GM RPO codes. (If the sticker is gone, you can ask your local Chevy dealer to get a listing for your VIN; there are also websites, but don't know how good they are.) Here is a link to a list of the codes.

http://www.marshu.com/images-website...-car-codes.pdf

Look up your codes on the list and you'll see what equipment your truck has. Then compare to the appropriate entry on the table starting on page 4-52 of your Owners Manual. The listing that matches your equipment will be the towing capacity you have.

When I bought my used 2009 Silverado, I had the dealer give me the codes for the VIN so I could figure out the tow rating before I bought it.
