Towing info

After seeing all of the recent posts about what trucks can tow, what fifth wheel should I get, I found this quite an interesting read.
Sticky: Actual federal weight law rules, some questions and answers

Gets a little long because one poster is determined to argue his opinion and there is quite a bit of back and forth, but it is interesting.

Well, not sure if the link works, but if you go to the Woodalls forum it's under "Tow vehicles".

Not to get anything started on here but how many campers have you seen at DOT scales getting weighed?

Were they transporters??? If they were they are subject to commercial rules and regulations, I have a good feeling they were. Those are the only ones required to enter a weigh station, same for semis, you could put not for hire on the side of a truck and they do not have to enter, these threads are not but speculation and boredom

And in that listing, it says that many states require you to pull in.

I am not arguing the point either way...just trying to provide some information instead of just people's thoughts or guesses...

It appears that if I am passing through one of these listed states and instructed to then I would need to pull in...IMHO it is what it is...if you are that worried about it then maybe you shouldn't be towing...

I have pulled through 40 of the fifth states in the US and have never ever had to enter a DOT road scale. I have even had a stations turn on a LED sign saying you do not have to enter the scale house. This blew my mind the first time I saw this in WI on I90 near Janesville after you enter the state.

I have written different States DOT when I first had my first 5er back in 2007. And all of their reply's where if you are a private hauler towing a non-commercial trailer then you do not need to enter a scale house.

My total weight of truck and trailer is slightly under 21,000 LBS when towing.

What I would worry more about are you pulling with the correct driver licenses? Most states have a limit of less than 26,001 LBS on a standard drivers Licenses and anything over that you need to have a different licenses. Read your Drivers Licenses and see what it states.
