Should have been easier to do 65mph going south since you would be going downhill...

2009 GMC 2500HD 6.0 CC 3.73 gears....towing 9500lbs with Tow/Haul mode engaged
*7mpg in hill/mt areas
*9mpg on flats @ 65mph
*12mpg city (no loads)
*16mpg on highway @ 70mph ( no loads)
For a gasser, very happy with the GMC and I expected these mpg figures before I bought... Suspension and frame on these GM trucks are superb for towing heavy loads.

Had to jump in on this one, since I have a 2010 Tundra Crewmax with the 5.7L engine. I get around 16mpg unloaded on 87 octane gas, and while I have not done an actual calculation on the towing mpg's, the rough estimate based on miles traveled and how much gas it took to fill back up was about 8 or 9 mpg - about what I expected. I am towing a 35 foot, 8000# (dry weight) Wildwood, and I must say, that Tundra pulls the trailer excellently. I can accelerate uphill on the interstate and pass people easily. I am very suprised at the towing power of this half ton truck. I had considered buying a diesel Ford or Chevy for towing my TT, but the extra cost of the fuel and maintenence was not worth it to me. Also, this Toyota will still be pulling the crap out of my travel trailer long after it's Ford or Chevy counterparts have had transmissions, rear ends, and even engines replaced. TOYOTA POWER!!!

I have a 2011 Tundra with a 4.6 liter V8 engine. Trailer dry weight is about 3300 lbs. I get about 11.5 mpg when towing. Speed limit is 55 mph here in CA.
Most of my non-towing driving is on city roads (25-35 mph) which really impacts my daily mileage.

Tow speed has a huge effect on fuel mileage. Your experience is evidence of that.

I have towed for many years and I just bought a gmc diesel to tow my 12000lb silverback fifth wheel. I get 11-12mpg on the highway. When I had a chevy with a 6L gas engine I towed a 8000lb travel trailer I only got 8mpg. My saying now is if you tow diesel is the way to go. Yes the engine is moreexpensive but you get at least half that back when you sell it. Yes diesel is more expensive around town but not really on the road.and if you look at my example of the better mpg on a diesel I do not think diesel is 50% higher because I am now getting 50% better mpg towing more weight. Also when your on the road and have to stop for fuel pulling over 30 feet of trailerinto the truck bays at truck stops makes fuel a breeze. As long as I tow I will never by a gasser again

First I can tell you, it is the ethanol that is driving mileages lower than could be. If you can buy gas without the corn juice it will be much better. I have a: 2010 Silverado 5.3L, Z71, 4x4, 4.73 gears, 6 speed Allison, crew cab (mini-bed). By itself staying around 70-75MPH I can get a little over 18MPG average on a trip. Pulling the empty (no toys no water) Grey Wolf 21RR and staying under 65, I can get as high as 10.7MPG and as low as 10MPG going across country (some hills). Loaded for bear and in the bigger hills, staying below 60, I am doing good to get 9.5MPG. I agree cruise control causes too much shifting. Tow Haul seems to help when in hills or stop and go. I seldom use it. What I do is keep in in 5th almost all the time, but will manually shift it down to whatever gear keeps the revs up to around 3000 RPM with as little throttle application as possible. On flat ground, it will run as fast as you want to go in 5th and sometimes going down hill I will shift it up to 6th. I went out west last year and was surprised how puny the 5.3L was... not to mention I was ready to sell the truck! A 14% (or higher) grade is an eye opener, for this flat-lander!!! Also, how hot the transmission got! It was running on 12% grade for miles... it would only run 25MPH and in second gear with the throttle near the floor. When I scanned the transmission temp and saw 280, I backed off only a little, and the temp was back under 200 mile or two. Mileage in that "section" couldn't have been higher than 6 or 7!

I concur with this statement. I get 17-20 city/highway with my 2003 F-250 7.3 and around 13 towing my 5ver weighing 7000+ at 60-65 mph. Last week I helped a friend tow two horses to Virginia. Horses and trailer about 5000 lbs. We were running about 70-75 mph got less then 12 mpg. So like the old saying goes "Speed Kills"

towing mpgs
We.. (or should i say our F 150 truck) averaged 9-10 mpg towing from Michigan to St.Augustine Beach ,Florida last winter. i would say a good average speed of 60-65 mph..using the "tow haul mode"...the hills on I-75 going thru Kentucky and Tennesse were not that bad i climed at a steady 55 mph without much strain on the truck.. the beauty of my F150..when NOT towing which is probably 70% of the time or more ..i can burn E85 which lately is at $3.30 a gallon ..or less..and.. my truck will get 17 -18 mpg on E85 fuel

Nice!
On another note, I think it is rather funny that people drop $60K on a truck and then another $60K on a trailer; and then worry about an extra $100 in fuel or cheap out on a noisy generator. Kinda crazy don't you think? This is just a general observation . . . . .

Mileage
2009 Ford F250 V10 gas pulling a 33' Cardinal 5th wheel at 12,000#.
8-9 mpg at steady 60 mph combo flat and some hills.
Did not buy this for fuel economy

I dropped (over the next 6 years, that is) 17k on my truck, and 18k on the trailer so that extra $100 means a lot to me, lol. Thats about half of one months TT payment
