Towing Oscillation

I'm towing a Minilite 2304 with a Chevy Silverado and a 350 cid engine off a standard bumper pull which is obviously not adequate. I pull my horse trailer with two horses and no problems but not my Minilite. When on the interstate the Minilite seems like a gigantic spring pushing and pulling the truck down the road. Also the camper is slightly down angle dragging the chain so that I have to tape up the chain like an athletic supporter :-) On a rainy day the weight on the bumper takes enough off the front wheels that the truck frequently hydroplanes. My question is would a load equalizing hitch fix this problem and if so what hitch do you recommend? Or should I just buy a bigger truck? Thanks

Put a good weight dist hitch on it! No more wheelies.....

Yes! Plus you can then have the ability to add a sway control bar.

Agree with the above... Definitely a weight distribution hitch with sway control.

Get a good weight distribution hitch with integrated sway like equal-i-zer or Reese dual cam. Take the time to set it up properly. Towing will be a night and day difference for you.

Oh and as for the chains you can shorten them.

I can't emphasize enough the importance of learning to use the WDH properly.....both for effectiveness and personal safety. Maybe someone can go through it with you once you get it??

For the chains, you can also just twist/wind 'em up some.

This would be solved by just about any WD Hitch. I personally have a Fastway E2 Trunnion 2-Way Sway control hitch and it is great. If I had ti to do all over again I would but the Fastway Equal-i-zer 4-Way hitch. This is a great debate as everyone seems to have a favorite. Anderson makes a good one, Blue Ox makes a good one, if you want to spend thousands (I don't) ProPride makesa GREAT one. I say middle of the road ($400-600) variety is sufficient.

Equalizer hitch.

I agree with all. WDH will move the weight of the trailer toward the front wheels of the truck. Follow instructions for sitting up the WDH. Truck should not sag in the rear and the front of truck should be level with the WDH and trailer. I just purchased a new TT with the Equalizer 4-point hitch. I only pulled about 20 miles and was great.

Ron you bought your Trailer in (New York) you live in (RKansas)! you also pulled it out West to Ski in the Winter! What type of (W/D Sway control) did (RV Direct in New York) put on your truck when you were ready to return Home to (RKansas)? Youroo!!

Albany rv just hooked it up to the bumper and I've been rocking and rolling down the interstate since then with a lot of creative driving. I'm gonna pull the ripcord on a new hitch in the near future. Thanks.

Ron now you add I have been using a (Lot of Creative Driving)one thing about your situation with No (Wd/Sway Control) you Still need it! Youroo!!

if you had read your truck's owners manual, in the towing section, i'm pretty sure it would've told you that you needed a WDH.
my Avalanche's manual gave me that info.

another vote for the 4pt. Equal-i-zer!

Doesn't that equalizer make it hard to back up? Have to take the sway bar off before backing ECt??

With the Equalizer hitched you can back up without doing anything.

Some you do and some brands you don't. I have to remove mine and do it down the road in a parking lot then drive 1/4 mile to my house and back right in. Its really not a problem for me.
