Unscientific guess. About 25%.

I'm within the towing capacity of my truck but over the gross combined weight by about 100 lbs when fully loaded wife, firewood, etc.

I believe that more tow over their GCWR before they hit their GVWR. I know I am!

My gut says 50% tow over one or more rating.
I just look around at the TV/TT combos at the state parks we visit on which to base that 50% number. And, I think only 10% of those know it.

I am fortunate to live close to a scale. Very easy to check GCWR as I leave for a trip. I'm close but not over. Good to know where I stand.

I think Ron (turbo) and Scott (triguy) have it right. I believe it's a pretty high percentage and few know it.
Frustratingly, I think some of those are willingly ignoring it (don't want to weigh or learn about weights). "It was built to tow - it'll be fine." (actual quote, sadly)

You're right - GCWR is pretty easy. GVWR takes a little more work (you gotta weigh, drop the camper in a parking spot and weigh again and then re-hook on).
I think I'm going to make more of a habit of weighing to get a feeling for GCWR, just to see how our packing makes a difference.

I did it with my Titan until I got on here and read about all of it. I new about weights but not enough. I was always over my titans gvwr but never over gcwr. I now have a tundra with a higher gvwr and am within all my limits. But I will admit I had no idea until I read on here. And because of that I would think 50% of people are over and most have no idea like me at first.

I think it could be way higher than we think. Because as has been and is currently being discussed on this forum people do not do their homework. They go into a dealership--- TV/RV--- uneducated about weight and what it really means. How many times do we here ... THAT DURAMAX/ALLISON will pull anything, or THAT CUMMINGS or POWER STROKE no problem. It's just a shame as hard as we try to help educate our fellow campers the questions come after the deal is done and now it's time for WHITE KNUCKLE driving or a big PIT in the stomach. Didn't mean to rant or change the thread.

Interesting. I actually believed that most people ran out of payload before getting to GCWR.
Maybe I'm just used to the family scenario where we carry a bunch of crap. (The difference between my truck's payload on the sticker and what we actual weighed at was a good 1,500 pounds.)

When I leave the house loaded for a 10 day camping trip I'm 80 lbs over TV GVWR but under all other weight limits. I guess if I eat a few less twinkies I could get under that! HAHA
From what I see on the road there are a lot over weight.

Just by the number of posters on this forum who are towing 9000 lb campers and fifth wheels with their non-EcoBoost half-tons, I would tend to agree with the 25% guess.
Some are grossly over-loaded.
Not my cup of tea, that's for sure.

Ependydad,
You are correct, I was incorrect in my statement.
I'll try again; I believe that more tow over their GVWR before they hit their GCWR. I know I am!
I apologize for any confusion!

Several years at the RV Boot Camp in Livingston, TX, the instructor indicated that studies reflect that upwards of 50% of RV are overloaded.

I'm amazed at the towing folks who don't have a clue, could care less and/or don't get it even when told point blank to them. I can understand those who simply didn't know and that's where forums like this really help. The downside of overloading your TV + camper are obvious. As stated in another thread, if lawyers, your insurance company and others get on to you, you will be in serious do-do. From what I have seen in cgs, there are a LOT of overloaded TVs - from mild to severe. I cringe when I see something like a crossover towing a 5,000 lb plus trailer, esp. without sway control.
I do think that there needs to be a change by law makers, law enforcement, RV dealers and hitch installers. Maybe RV owners need to pass a course or carry some kind of permit for their specific TV and camper combo. Part of the problem is when you buy a TT or 5th, nobody says nothin' to you about payload and towing capacities and how to calculate it. It would be great if when you buy your RV insurance or RV that they give a booklet with all the details and info. in it.
We were talking to one dealer here and they said they wouldn't let you drive off their lot if your TV was not adequate. Too bad they aren't all like that.

This is the key right there. The dealers should warn their customers if they feel they are overweight. But all they are looking for is the sale.

I will know it on 9 days when I hit the scales. I am going to hit then as wet as possible to simulate the worst case. I feel that I am close if not a touch over my TV GVW... Yet got room in my tow capacity.
