I've come to almost the same conclusion. My research indicates that the MaxTow has 3.73 gears, rear "GG" springs, "upgraded" receiver hitch, tow mirrors and a slightly different steering gear ratio(17:1 versus 20:1). My conclusion is that with the newer 6 speed transmissions, gear ratio has much less affect on towing capability. Trucks with 20" or larger wheels have the "GG" rear springs. The receiver hitch has no affect on payload. Steering ratio change I see as pointless? I added the tow mirrors to mine, added XL load range tires, air bags and am about to change out the shocks. I believe that in a head to head comparison my truck would fare much better than a stock Max Tow. A MaxTow would give slightly better acceleration numbers, but I think you'd see little difference in holding speeds.
