Towing: The big 3 fuel milage!

Just purchased a new 2015 Chevy Dually Silverado 3500hd 4x4 My trailer weighs about 10,500lbs loaded, was wondering where will I be in mpg's?

What are the Fords and the Dodge's getting? This could turn into a very interesting thread.

It comes down to your gearing, 4x4 vs. 4x2, etc.

My camper is 14,800 loaded. I have the 4x4 and 4.10 gears. I get right about 9-10mpg towing and generally 11-14 not towing. All hand calculated.

Brand new truck? New technology? Pulling 10k? Yea you should be good for 10-11mpg? I guess.

I get 18 - 20 commuting about 40 miles each way... and 12 - 14 towing 7,000# TT. Calculated by hand... the truck computer is happier than that... but that's there to sell trucks.

You're right it would make for an interesting thread...there have been many about mpg....just search it, and you will see. Problem is, too many variables..some of us live in the hills, the mountains, some of us are on the prairies where the land is so flat you can see for miles and miles. Some figures are grossly exaggerated, some have poor math skills....and 90% of the threads become a gas vs diesel debate.

Hope for 10, but sometimes 9.5-12...depending.....18 when not hooked up to 5er...not bad for a gasser....until someone figures out how to get rid of the barn door you are pulling 60 mph.....slow down if you want to use less fuel....as long as you can stay in 6th gear..... good luck

Doesn't matter what brand the diesel truck is, they'll all get about the same mpg, pulling the same exact trailer.
Not sure why you think they might differ.

Mileage

2014 Ram 3500 DRW. The mileages sound about right. On a trip from IL to Ft Bragg NC mileage reader thru the computer had about 16 to 17 mpg not pulling anything. But for me I didn't buy a truck this big because I was worried about mpgs. It's all about the pulling power,if I wanted mpgs I would buy a smaller baby truck. thats my thoughts. I keep written record of each time I fill up whether I'm loose or towing. Just returned from trip to VA Med center in Dublin, GA which is 398.6 miles round trip. I was NOT towing. Used 19.8 gals per the pump. That's 20.14 mpg anyway you look at it. Usually get 12-14 hauling 10,400 lbs TT with 45 gal transfer tank in bed of truck. Truck is Chevy Silverado 2500HD with tuner. Have gotten as much as 22 mpg at 60 mph.

When I had my light wt. like that I got 19 in the hills of Or. I have a 3500HD DRW 3:73 rears now and thereis a lot of variables wind hill wt. I have Sierra 365saq and I got 17 mpg going from Mayer Az to Mesa Az but running against 30mph wind from Victoria Tx to Houston I got 12mpg
so emty I get 22-23 mpg of course wind may change that.

Reason I asked was because I had heard that the Dodges were getting 10-15% better than the Fords and Chevys. How much will the tuners help on mpg? Do wind deflectors really help? Thanks for the replies.

Not true GM gets better mpg and tuners have diffeerent setting preformance for better mpg but can't be used when towing according to the one i have and it is super-chips no better milage when towing and furthermore i didn't see anymore exceptional power than my duramax allready had but that is one opinion it don't work for me so i don't use it anybody want to buy its for sale.

The Lie-O-Meter in the dash tells me 14.1 combo empty. Towing I'm at 11. It don't really matter because it's the smiles per gallon, not the miles, IMO. The truck is tuned, kitty cat delete, EGR delete and a 4" turbo back stainless MBRP exhaust.

THAT pretty much says it all! Really don't know why everybody wants to compare MPG....all have differing circumstances, vehicles, trailers and driving habits- makes no sense. Just figure out what YOUR setup is doing and plan accordingly. Over time, I've learned that for trip planning, with MY truck, MY camper and MY driving habits, our setup costs right at 35-40 cents a mile (when diesel was $3.80+-) to get from point A to point B....and that computes to about 11mpg - FOR ME

You don't have the appropriate tuner.
You need to be using efi live.
those handheld one tune fits all bricks are worthless.
