Teh tires, brakes and such are not much bigger on a 150/1500 class truck than they are on a minivan and the truck weights 1000lb more.
I've always been of the opinion weight carrying is rated too low - ye olde full sized car could carry 6 adults and luggage - if one assumes 150lb people that's fine, but I don't know very many adults that are 150lbs anymore.
I'm 240, my wife (no one's reading this, right?) is over 200, three of the four women that work for me are over 200 as well, the one young that works for me is closer to 250.
I've met most of my wife's coworkers and while some may be 150 or less there are twice as many that are 250 plus.
As for the load in a honda minivan - go put 6 people in that sucker and see where the rear bumper sits. I had a windstar for years with a hitch on it and empty or with my kids in the back no issue, but with 2 'normal' aka 150lb or less) adults back there (rearmost seat) the receiver would hit leaving my driveway.
Remember that these 'weight ratings' are not figure on what max weight will break the vehicles springs or frame. They are based on things such as stopping distance, emergency handling, pothole impact, clearing speed bumps, acceleration for merging, component life, etc.
