Towing with a 2018 F150 with 2.7TC Engine

Is there anybody out there that is towing anything with a F150 with a 2.7TC engine? Charts state it can tow 8000 pounds. Just looking tow a 6500 GVW trailer.

You need to look at Payload Capacity before you look at Towing Capacity. Because nearly all tow vehicles will run out of payload WAY before getting close to max tow capacity.
Tell us what the driver's door sticker says is the payload.
It'll say "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs".
Also does it have the factory tow package and what is rear end ratio, can size, bed size, 4x2 or 4x4?
There's a lot more, than just engine size, in figuring towing and payload capacity.

I am confused by the trend toward large trailers and small truck engines.

Well this is sure to get heated...

There are lots of threads with information on towing capacity and payload and half tons and 3/4 tons and on and on...

The short version; do some reading here. Then do your own math. Whatever you do do- don't trust the dealer.
They will look only at your max rating and rarely take into account the other factors. You will see in other threads people being told by dealers they can get a 10,000lb trailer with a half ton because "the book says" they can pull 11,000lbs.

And most dealerships 'Online Towing Calculators' on their websites use the RV's dry weight...

As do many RV sales people.

Not the real world towing weights.

I think that this is why many people wind up with RV's too big for their britches!

2.7 Eco Boost towing

I pull about 4500 pounds in a small travel trailer with a 2015 F150 2.7 Eco Boost, 4x4, and crew cab. It does great. I don't like to drive much over 60 but it will certainly to over 70 without problems. My mileage is between 10.8 and 12.1 . Never had any over heating or high trans temp issues. Wouldn't have any concerns with 6500 pounds, heck it has twice the horsepower of my old dodge pickup and I pulled over 7000 pounds with it.

Same with me, same truck and camper weight. No problems with towing.

Not trying to split hairs here, but just throwing out there that the typical way to refer to that engine is 2.7EB- as in Ecoboost. As for looking at GVWR of the trailer- even though many here advocate for it, it's misleading and inaccurate. You can have 2 trailers with a GVWR of 6500 that actually weigh very different amounts. For example, I have a Puma with a GVWR of over 10,500. Loaded and ready to camp it weighs around 9500. Many other similar floorplan trailers I looked at weighed the same amount, so they'd have been 9500 ready to camp, too, but they had a lower GVWR (most around 9500). Would be completely illogical to argue one would need more truck for the higher GVWR trailer when actual loaded weight is the same. You need to look at the actual yellow sticker weight of the trailer you're considering. You can then estimate how much you'll carry- 1000lbs. for a typical family of 4 is commonly used. Full timers or those that carry a full water tank need to figure more. Others that pack lightly and camp for short durations can figure less.

I had the same exact truck with the same size motor. I kept worrying about it so much that I went back to my dealer and ended up trading that truck for the 3.5 motor and 10-speed transmission. And let me tell you, we purchased a 2019 Forest River Grey Wolf Limited Edition (33ft.) and it really carries the mail, to say the least. Don't just look at the dry weight, you need to factor in if you will be carrying fresh water and what you will be loading the trailer with. Add the dry weight with what the storage capacity weight is and this should make you aware of the towing capacity that you need. I feel your pain and concern, I have been exactly where you are just a few shorts months ago. I hope this helps you.

Why, specifically, were you "worrying about it so much?"

I have 2017 SC with a 2.7 and tow a TT that weighs 5500 lb loaded up with no issues. Check the Owners manual for CGVW and tow capacity. My truck's tow capacity is 7400 LB with a 3.55 rear axle....no popcorn required, lol

Yeah, I was wondering what a 2.7TC is.

I thought torque is more important than horsepower when towing.
I'll get the popcorn.

Torque accelerates and gets you moving, horsepower determines how fast you can do it.

But I'm sure you knew this and were just stirring the pot.

You don't like the 4 cylinder engine in the new Silverado?

That was the very first truck that I've ever owned in my life and I'm a novice (newbie) when it comes to the RV life. I had looked a Jayco and from what the salesman was telling me at Camping World, had me freaking out thinking that the truck could pull it but it would be close once I loaded it with cargo. I learned a lot about researching and not trusting Camping World, but that's another discussion topic. I'm very satisfied with my trade, I broke even in the trade, my first truck was only two years old with 28K miles on it. Still learning and have a long ways to go, that's why I'm being proactive and reading as much of these discussion topics as I can and actively participating.
