Towing with a 4.8 chevy, anyone?

Just got a truck at a steal, and just curious if there is anyone out there towing with one. I will be towing a 26 footer. Ext cab 4x4. I will tow once or twice a year

you need to provide more info, like factory tow package or not, bed size, rear end ratio, what year?

I think for the short runs you will be ok (dry and Empty). But with a Silverado that has max towing of 9,000lbs, a travel trailer that is 8,000lbs (loaded) it won't take much to overload your truck with a truck-box in the back, and a crew cab space for people. 1) what do you know about a weight distribution hitch? 2) Take it to the local gravel pit that has a scale and weigh them together.

Never used one. I towed it twice with my 08 2500HD ext cab. It was ok. Never towed anything this long and heavy before.

Kuba:

You don't say what brand of truck you have, but you should check your owners manual. My 2009 Silverado manual lists 99 permutations of the 1500 (different engines, cabs, cooling package, rear end ratio etc.). Don't know about 2011, but for 2009, the best a tow capacity I could find similar to you (4.8 L, 3.42 rear end, no tow package) was 5800 lbs. 8000 lbs is WAY over.

yea, with no factory tow package and a 3.42 rear end, not going to be able to tow that big of a trailer.
smaller v-8, no factory tow package and lousy rear end ratio for towing, sorry!

you'd have to duplicate the tow package and change the rear end ratio.
even then 8,000lbs. is 3/4 ton range.

Agree with bikendan above . I have 4.8 , 3.73 4 wheel drive and tow package. I can tell I am at limit with approx 4200 lbs. I would never attempt anything over 5k. It may pull it... stopping will be a challenge.

Dry weight of my trailer is 4000#, when moving out of it before the last winter, i carried everything out in two laundry baskets +32" led tv. Really dont have much in it. Its only me and a 5yr old daughter.
Rrickim63: no brakes on the trailer?? What about brake controller?

I will have to get WDH for sure, i was thinking of going 4.11 but the truck is 4spd only. My 2500 has an allison plus 6spd.
Got that 2011 for 15k so its staying

I have brakes for trailer. But you may find out its always harder to stop then it is to accelerate. Expect about 10 mpg . When its all loaded, you will be significantly over dry weight..everyone thinks they pack light..reality is most people will add 1000 lbs over listed dry weight when ready to go.

Good. It can feel under powered going up long steep grades. Downshift coming down hills when needed. I like my truck. Just be aware of half ton limitations.

is that brochure/website "dry" weight or actual white/yellow factory sticker weight?

you "had" a diesel truck and stepped down to the least capable 1/2 ton you could get for towing when you decided to tow more than you ever have

oh. Well you don't have an Allison trans with a 6.0 gas, but still a much better tow vehicle than a 4.8 1/2 ton

Bikendan: website weight. I will be getting LT tires, WDH, extra set of leafs added(already have it).....and most likely getting Trail Express tires changed to Marathons.

My suggestion is to sell BOTH pickups and get one that can pull your 8000lb trailer. Or sell one and trade the other in on the better pickup.
