Towing With A Tundra

We have a 2012 Toyota Tundra 5.7 DC 4X4 and we're presently towing a 21 foot Heartland Edge weighing around 4,000 lbs loaded--effortlessly and very safely. We've started our search for a bigger trailer and thinking about a lightweight Rockwood Signature 5th wheel. Does anyone have experience with the Tundra and a 5th wheel trailer? We love the Tundra, so changing the tow vehicle is not an option for us. Thanks for your comments. Fran

I have a Tundra as well and love it. However you will find that the Tundra's relatively low payload capacity will limit your choices of fith wheels. I know of a few people pulling fifth wheels with a Tundra on here. Just be aware when you are looking.

Also have a 07 tundra We tow a 35 ft windjammer about 8000 lbs no trouble at all. But it's a travel trailer.

No experience here but just from what I have read on a couple of RV forums one concern with 1/2 ton trucks & fifth wheels can be the payload number.

Travel trailers are another animal.

Don't get the wrong impression - I love my Tundra! Regardless if you are using a Tundra or another brand of 1/2 ton truck you need to know what you are dealing with.

We're looking into the very lightweight 5th wheels below 30 foot. The advertised weight of the Rockwood Signature series has our attention. I'm still trying to understand the benefits of towing a 5th wheel with the Tundra--maybe there isn't any, but we like the layout of the 8244WS.

The GVWR for that camper is 8050 lbs. Pin weight would be between 1207 (15%) and 1610 (20%). My 2010 5.7 4x4 DC SR5 has a payload capacity of 1580 (old method) or 1380(new SAE standard). That being said you still need to subtract the weight of the hitch and people riding in the truck. I don't math well but the numbers don't add up. That is why I went with a bumper pull.

Merry Christmas!

Great explanation for the Tundra crowd to help them understand what they are able to shop for in a 5'ver

Fifth wheel towing is much more enjoyable than a TT, especially on the interstates. Once you figure out what 5'ver weight your truck can handle, then you can shop for floor plans within that weight range.
Good Luck!

As already mentioned, the truck's payload will be the limiting factor when it comes to towing a 5W.

The best way to determine the capacity you have available is a trip to the weigh scales and weigh the truck, front and back axles, with full fuel, people and gear that you would normally carry. You need to add about 175 lbs to the rear axle weight for a manual hitch. The Rockwood/Flagstaff 5W come with a Revolution pinbox and a sliding hitch won't be required.

The weight capacity available for pin weight would be the truck's GVWR minus the total scaled weight. You can also look at capacity by subtracting the weighed rear axle weight from the truck's GAWR.

The bad news is that you probably have about 1000 - 1100 lb capacity by GVWR and maybe 1300 - 1400 lb capacity by GAWR. In my opinion, exceeding the rear axle weight rating of the truck is unacceptable.

Ditto that!

I have the 2012 5.7 Tundra also. Although I really wanted a 5er, I couldn't justify having a bigger truck around. Tundra pulls my Salem 22rks fine. Just wish I owned an oil rig! If you check on the Tundra forums you will see much about pulling 5ers with a 1/2 Ton Tundra.

Merry Christmas

Go to tundratalk.net and ask this question in the towing section. Many people there tow a 5er with a Crewmax. One problem with the Crewmax is the 5 foot bed.

Looks like tow hitch rather than 5th wheel is what to go with for a Tundra. Do it just right, and you can haul a space shuttle at a few mph.

A dude a few streets over tows a flaggstaff with his tundra. I never met him, but he takes it out a few times a year.

I have been pulling a fifth wheel with a Tundra since 2000. I currently have a 2010 with the 5.7. I am looking to upgrade the trailer again. With the fifth wheel you should watch your hitch weight. The other factor with the Tundra is the extra deep bed. There are many fifth wheels out there that the Tundra is more than capable of handling. Currently have a 25' that it tows very easily. Looking at the 8526RKWS for my upgrade. If I can just find one in Oregon!!
