Towing with an f150

We are almost sold on a 2014 Cherokee 274 DBh. Just wondering if anybody has concerns about towing 6200 pounds with my f150. I have the tow pack with tranny cooler. Any guidance would be welcome.

Thanks
Damian

Which engine ? The weight appears to be in the range of a tow equipped F150 with a weight distributing hitch. Personally I would put LT tires on the F150 speaking from experience, makes a world of difference in handling.

When I weighed my trailer, it was at 6,200#... My "11 F-150 does OK, but just OK. I would not try to haul anything heavier or longer. The day after tomorrow, the F-150 is getting traded for a '14 Ram 2500 diesel. We're trading trucks now and will be upgrading our camper in a couple of years.

If it is not to late make it a 3500, for the little money difference you will be glad you did.

I'd think at 6200# the F150 would still do rather well.

Looks like I am rated at 8300 max trailer weight. Think I might put a tuner on it to pull out some bottom end torque. Truck about paid off, don't want to start over with more truck payments.

Hey Pirateman...here's my 2 cents just in case it helps piece of mind....

PLENTY of VERY helpful info on these forums, as well as a bunch of folks who will adamantly stand behind their "if it ain't a diesel it ain't right..." well at least a BUNCH of theories about at least being 3/4 ton vehicles...with preference to diesel.

Read ALL that you see here and form your own opinions, and MOST IMPORTANTLY just be careful, and HAVE A GOOD TIME! My Rockwook ROO 233S has a GVWR of 6,402 pounds, I try to be careful about cargo and I don't go over ~65mph unless 70 +/- is needed for passing and my 1/2 ton 5.3 liter Suburban does just fine....YES i feel headwinds bucking the huge wall im yanking along behind me and YES if big rigs (and even some cars/vans) pass too closely and quickly I get a tad of "push around" but I know to be prepared for it so I watch ALL other drivers with extra attention in addition to my own position and speed, taking a relaxed "we will get there when we get there" position will make you MUCH happier and you should be able to tow along just fine.

Remember, be safe and HAPPY CAMPING!

Let a few good tows get under your belt and THEN start asking yourself if a bigger engine/truck/or primary fuel source is more appropriate than what you are currently using...me I'm thinkin' screw the diesel and instead just jump right to NUCLEAR POWER and then I should be able to pull ANY (and maybe EVERY) trailer around! ;-)

If it wasn't clear..i've been towing with that Burb' for about a year and a half and am just now shopping for diesel, just not sure the price kick is in my tolerance zone yet. I believe that the heavier duty nature of ALL parts of the 3/4 ton truck will make a huge handling difference and of course the diesel torque will let me use cruise control once in a while!

You will find the majority of the weight police here will tell you a 1/2T is only good for towing a 6'x 8' lawnmower trailer and most recommend a 1t dually or larger for most pop ups and if it's a 5er, you need at least a Mack, Peterbilt or larger. They LOVE spending YOUR money.

I towed our TT with an F150 and it did pretty well.
Tires at max pressure, HD shocks and a Reese Dual Cam.
Watch your payload weight.

It will depend on a few things. There is a data tag on your door jamb that will tell you GVWR and GCVWR. Get those numbers and we can work a few scenarios. The other info we need:

Year and Model (Super Cab, Super Crew, long bed, short bed, 4x4)
Engine
Factory tow package?

There is no reason to think it can't tow the trailer, so long as your understand what your limitations are.

I would probably at least give it a try, yours has the transmission cooler and tow package. Just don't forget that climbing a hill is the smaller part of the equation, descending the other part.

In a word, "No."

See sig picture. That 5ver weighs 7500 pounds at the scale, leaving me almost a half ton of "margin"

Added additional tranny cooler, tranny temp gauge and Timbrens. That's all. Would recommend same mods to any 1/2 ton pulling just about anything.

For what it's worth: I pull our 5500# 261BHXL with a Tundra. The truck has a 4.30 rear end, 9700# SAE tow rating, and just over 1300# cargo. Wife and two kids, corn hole boards, tool box, spare manual tongue hack, and two evenings of firewood.
Everything pulls fine, tracks straight, rides smooth. I don't feel like I'm over loading. I can hold 65mph just fine, over hill and dale. Stopping is never scary unless due to someone else's stupidity.

We won't ever go much larger than what we have. Partly because I don't want a diesel truck. They are horridly expensive to maintain. Not for me. And I don't feel like I need a 30'+ palladium to enjoy camping.

Nothing wrong with a 1/2 ton, unless you need to win drag races to show you macho-hood.

I am pulling a 25DS which is rated at 4023# and 378# on the tongue. Loaded out by itself behind my 01' F150 it tows great. When I load it out with my Polaris Ranger 400 in the bed of the truck and 2 Honda 2K generators plus camp chairs, tools and all supplies. The fresh water tank topped off I scale out at 12500# total weight. I am 100# over on the rear truck axle but have airbags and LT 10ply tires aired up to 75psi.
Runs it down the road real well but does grunt a bit in the mountains. This truck has 198K miles on it and has been towing pretty much it's entire life.

When I looked up your 274DBH it said the DRY WEIGHT was 6261lbs. That's before you add battery, LP gas and all your junk. The GVWR is 7906lb.

So question is:
Just wondering if anybody has concerns about towing 7906 pounds with my f150?

If you're rated for 8300 lbs, your margin is pretty darn thin. 8300 lbs assumes one 150lb driver and nothing else in the truck.

We are pulling our Surveyor SP-240 empty at 4760# with an additional 2000# of gear in the camper and the truck we have weighed out pushing 7,000 and we pull it with 2013 tundra with the big engine. On the way to William, AZ on the interstate we had Big Rigs, Motor Homes and 5 th wheels pulling off the road to wait until the 35 to 50 mph winds eased up. We just plowed on at 55 to 60. Admittedly I would follow the big rigs that were fighting the head winds just to help out. While I think about a diesel rug occasionally but the expense of running the brutes when you are not pulling anything is absurd. I'll stick with my Tundra and like many other guys I am not likely
to ever pull anything larger.
I can understand if you are using a diesel in your business.

Thinking about payload actually would be my concern. I have no idea what the recommendations are on this TV.

Guy at work pulls a puma that is 6400# dry with his 2011 and says it does the job fine. Most of my driving will be on flat roads. The previous owner pulled a fifth with the truck. Still have the holes in the bed to show for it. Guess we will find out on Thursday
