For me, it all comes down to staying within ratings and math from there. See if this helps you:

We have a 2011 f150 screw with the 3:73 and the 6ft bed gears and we tow a Roo 233s we have the max tow pkg on the truck with the intergrated trailer brake. Love the power of a v8 and the fuel eff of the v6.

You will have plent of motor but like said above, do the math with weights. I towed similar weight TT with a 2009 F150 with max tow package(says able to tow 11,300#). Motor was great but the truck is too light and didnt make for a comfortable experience. I upgraded to a larger TV

You may need to order a truck to get the max payload/towing options with the interior/exterior/luxury package(s) that you want.
For the cost of a loaded F150 you can buy an F350...

Thanks guys

its hard to know which one is right. my 2005 fx4 tows the 3065w windjammer, but not well. I put 4.10 gears and a K&N filter. the truck seems to handle the weight fine but i dont have the power to handle hills. I want a desiel but dont want to pay $48,000 for a used fx4 250 when i can get a used eco for $37,000.

Thanks for the help! cheers

I have a 2012 FX4 ecoboost and it tows great. My truck has the 3.73 gears and the trailer tow package with the built in brake controller and I have not had any issues with it. My trailer loaded is 8300lbs with a tongue weight of 840lbs so it's not too far off from yours.

My 2cents, provided you are within all the weight limits and depending how often and far you tow, an ecoboost with the Max Trailer Tow package would work well. A larger truck will do a better job but in my case I bring the trailer to the lake in the spring, leave it there all summer and tow it home in the fall so a larger truck just doesn't make sense for about 300miles/year of towing.

Hope this helps!

Well, we love our Ecoboost. It has way enough power and good economy. BUT, the 3065 looks like the tongue weight is 950 pounds dry. I think that is too much for the payload of a typical F150 unless you the the HD payload package. Even then, check the hitch capacity. You may be close to or over the limit. I'm not sure whether the HD payload package gets you any more hitch capacity than Max Tow; 1,150 pounds.

Also, that's a pretty long trailer. It just seems that an F150 will be too light.

I have about 450 miles on my Solaire 317bhsk and 2013 EcoBeast with Max Tow combination and have had great success. I have only had one 65 mile stretch that made me nervous. I was towing on WB I-88 when 30+ mph cross/head wind kicked up. I think those conditions would have been rough with most trucks. Overall I have been extremely pleased with the performance of the EcoBeast while towing. My SolAire is about 9k loaded and around 925 on the tongue.

may be the picture but it looks like you have WAY WAY too much weight on the back of that truck - the rear is down, the front is up (based on wheelwell to tire distance).

The pic was posted for humor I hope!

This pic was taken after I transfered 4 coolers to the bed of my truck after arrival. Not typical weight load when towing.

My 2 cents, the cost is too close between the F-150 and F-250 / F-350. I'm sure the half's have no problem towing, but looking at the vehicle size and weight compared to a trailer, specifically a larger one, I'm going for the biggest TV. Tow a big trailer with a lighter half ton, and that trailer will command that truck in a bad wind or emergency situation. On a lighter smaller trailer, I wouldn't hesitate using the half ton. Wife says one ton dually is the smallest we'll ever have, should we go back to fifth wheels, which is likely. She has towed many a mile and can vouch for the difference in 1/2 vs. 1 ton trucks.

I often wonder, when are the truck manf. going to quit upping tow ratings? Just buy a dog gone 3/4 or one ton. If you haven't driven one lately, the ride is pretty darn good. Even the Dodge one ton, and I don't like Dodge, rides better now.

I have a 2012 Super Crew, EcoBoost 4x4. w/ 3.73 gears. I do not have the HD towing package or HD payload package. By the book with my engine and gear combo I max out at 9600lbs and 1520 payload. I haven't towed a lot with it yet, but what little I have it towed OK. I had a little sway on the interstate, and i think it was due to the trailer being empty. They guy that set up our WDH said he was accounting for a little more weight once we got our stuff in the trailer, plus I could have tightened up the sway control a litte more too.

I didn't have any power issues with pulling our Salem 27RKSS which is listed at 6300lbs dry and just over 700lbs tounge weight. I'll experiment with the WDH to either add or take away more weight as needed to help with the sway.

Feel confident that the EcoBoost has the power to pull nicely as long as you stay reasonable on the weight.

I can tell you from past experience towing a 32' TT (9500 lbs loaded) a 3/4 ton gasser is SOOO much more capable & comfortable towing than any 1/2 ton truck...wind gust & all

If you are looking at spending that kind of money and are wanting a Ford, seriously look at a used 11 or 12 F250 6.2 gasser. They will pull that trailer around with ease. I picked up our loaded 11 Lariat FX4 last fall for 32k. For pulling under 10k 3.73 gears are great in a SD truck with the 6.2. And there is also nothing wrong with the GM or Ram HD trucks with gas engines.

Lloyd, I have a 2604WS with a weight of about 6700lbs. I have towed it about 300 miles on I-95 with no problems at 60-65 mph. I have an equalizer hitch and have been to the CAT scales. The thing that eats you up fast is payload. I, after filling the tank, with me and OW in truck only have about 200 lbs of payload left. We can all pull something but are we safe. Heck, did you see the commercial of the Toy-Auto pulling the Space Shuttle? If you are only pulling less than 100 miles a year, shucks you can do 40mph and probably not worry. But if you want to go on a road trip then you will have many challenges be it mountains or weather. That's a big rig your pulling, if you plan to get out on the road do yourself a favor and buy a bigger TV.

We are heading out on a road trip this summer from Florida as far north as Prince Edward Island, Canada. I will be able to give some empirical data when that 5000 mile journey is complete. Good luck on finding that right TV.

You sorta answered your own question when you said you would travel more if you had more truck. You will be happier with a 3/4 or 1 ton than with a 1/2 ton, diesel or gas. I bought 1/2 ton and regretted it and upgraded 3 yrs later. Ended up costing me more doing that.

I have towed my Work and Play 18EC, loaded at 8,000 lbs with motorcycle in back, for about 11,000 miles so far with my 2011 F150 Ecoboost. Tows great, even up mountains. Plenty of power and very stable with WDH and sway bar. At 60 mph I average just under 10 mpg. Camper has aerodynamics of a refridgerator box. Very happy with all except milage which I am slowly accepting.

That said, if I buy a camper any larger than what I have I will buy at least 3/4 ton and go diesel.
