Towing with lighter F150

Ok, I pulled the trigger today. Ordered a F150 Lariat, 3.5 Ecoboost , 4x4, Max tow (3.55 e-locker), tow mirrors, 36 gallon fuel tank, no sunroof and about every luxury item I wanted this morning. And yes, Heavy Duty payload was not available for this truck. According to Ford my payload capacity is 2,020 lbs and Max tow is 10,700. This will work perfect for my needs and wants.

I drove the Ram 2500 diesel yesterday and it is a great truck. Just a little large for my everyday driver and I know my wife would not drive it because it intimidated her.

Just ordered our 2015 F-150XLT SCab 8'Box, 3.5L V6 EcoBoost with Max-Tow and Heavy-Duty Payload Packages (w/extended fuel tank in Bronze Fire today!

I was not happy to read the attachment where extended range fuel tank will add 12 weeks lead time. I called my salesman and he had not heard this. He says I should have a VIN on Friday and will know then. We are leaving the 2nd week in July so this may not work as well as I planned

We saw plenty of F-150s in the lot, most with the extended fuel tanks (including Lariats)... Hoping you get a different answer, fingers crossed!

Everything we want for our build won't be available until 7/6, so we knew this going in...

Would love to hear what you learn, anything earlier would just be a bonus (what's the saying; under promise/over deliver?!)

Interesting. I just checked on a 2016 Super Duty last week, and the build time for that was June 2015. And the article indicates that some models of the 2015 F150s will just start production in July 2015. Go figure.

Tell me about it! We were all set to order a 2015 F-250 and were told the cutoff was April 2. Really?! Its only APRIL!! I'm with you, go figure... It is what it is, overall, I'm happier with our choice for the F-150. Everything happens for a reason...

Check the fine print on axles and springs. In my case the actual equipment on the King Ranch is Max Payload, just not stated as such.

Do you have the 7 lug wheels instead of the 6 lug? I know the 2013's you could only get the 17 inch wheels with 7 lugs if you had the Max payload.

There is a lot of confusion among many on the payload packages. There is a "payload package" on the 2.7 ecoboost, and it has been available for quite a while. Unfortunately, some advertise or state that their 2.7 ecoboost payload package F150 has the "Heavy Duty Payload" package, which is available with only the 3.5 Ecoboost and 5.0.


The HD payload package is only available on XL, XLT and Lariat 500A package, and option groups that can be ordered. I ordered one since I would choose capabilities over the gadgets. Other than the one seen in Canada, (probably a test or training build truck) we still expect full production of the HD payload package trucks to commence in July.

• Upgraded springs and auxiliary transmission oil cooler
• XL: 17-inch Silver Steel Wheels
• XLT/LARIAT: 18-inch Silver Aluminum Wheels

It also includes commercial-rated tires.

The 17" wheels are 7-lug and the 18" are 6-Lug

That's the big handicap of any 1/2 ton...reach your payload capacity way, way before reaching the maximum tow capacity.

Have you looked at the payloads of the new 1/2 tons? Many are well over 2,000 pounds.

I traded in my 05 F-150 5.4 for a 2014 F-150 Ecoboost and could not be happier. I am not sure that I am sold on the new 2015 yet not really liking the look of them.

I had the 5.4 previously and really like my 2013 Ecoboost with the max tow, it sure tows much better with a lot less down shifting and up shifting. I may look at the 2016 F150 if they have the 10 speed automatic by then but I agree, I'm not really into the new look as of yet. It might grow on me but I'll see when my lease is up how I feel about them.

I'm in the same boat about the new looks. I've seen a few with just the right configuration that I think look OK, but not a big fan at this point.

My new F150 Lariat 4x4 with 3.55, max tow, 36 gallon fuel tank, and power tow mirrors arrived is week. The payload is a little lower than I expected at 1,650, but still 500 pounds higher than my 2011. I did the math and that works well for me and my set up.

It rides better and so far getting about 3 mpg better in combined driving than my 2011. Next month we will be towing 7,500 pound toy hauler out to Colorado.

Would suggest you change out the tires from P to LT before you get any miles on them. P tires and towing do not play well together.

I thought about that too. My 2011 F150 had 275/55/20 Michelin LTX and had a max load of 2,403 pounds. The Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude 275/65/18 on this truck has a max load of 2,756 pounds, 353 pounds more per tire. That's a pretty big difference. I know a big part of that difference is between the 18 and 20 in wheels. I was pretty happy with the LTXs so I decided to give these tires a try before replacing.

An update on the 2015 Ram 2500 diesel that we got instead of the 2015 F-150 HD payload we ordered last August (see earlier posts on this thread): We just returned this week from a month-long, 4,000-mile trip to southern Utah, Nevada, and California. Our calculated mileage for the entire trip was 12.9 MPG, with about 3,000 of those miles towing our 2016 Rockwood 5th wheel and ~1,000 miles of day trips without the trailer.

The diesel was a real money saver in California where we paid as much as 30 cents a gallon LESS for diesel fuel than the price for regular gas at the same stations. Why diesel is so much cheaper in a state with the strictest air pollution standards in the nation makes no sense to me because it wasn't true anywhere else we traveled. But I'm very glad it was that way since California fuel prices were ridiculously high compared to other Western states we were in.
