Although on a Chevy 2500HD, I was getting the same circumstances. It was a poor ground on the trailer wiring itself. Redid the ground wires and haven't had the problem since.

Look closely at connector on bumper of truck. Look for any corrosion on any of the terminals. Do the same for the connector on the TT. Just one more thing that's easy to eliminate.

They can be added after the fact which it sounds like it was done here.

Yes they can be but non the less, that is a factory brake controller, not an aftermarket.

If it was added after the fact, it would have to be programmed into the computer for it to work. I did exactly this two trucks ago.

Totally agree. Easy add. Can be enabled with Forscan. Doesn't have to be factory installed.

Pictures of the hitch receiver could determine if it has the standard tow package or the Max Tow package.
If it's the Max Tow package, the integrated brake controller, 36 gallon fuel tank and beefier receiver would come with the package.

I had the same problem with my trailer. It turned out to be the WDH that was the problem. The emergency activation brake cable was being pinched under one of the bracket plates that receives the stabilizer arm on the trailer tongue. The mechanic looked for more than two hours before noticing that pinched cable. He released the bracket, repositioned the cable, and re-attached the bracket. That immediately took care of the problem.

Co-worker has the exact 2011 with the exact same controller. Factory install.

Went out at lunch and looked at it.

I have a Ford F150 2011 hauling a Forest River Microlite. My truck said I wasn't connected. Crawled underneath the trailer just behind the hitch. There's a junction box where the trailer connector to the truck goes. Gave it a wiggle at the box and sparks shot out. FR had jammed a bunch of wires into a small box and had not protected the wires leaving the box. Rubbing caused the wires to short. Dealer didn't want to fix it under warranty, but I showed him video of the jumping sparks. That got fast results.

I had that same problem on an older camper. Turned out it was the cord coming from the trailer.

Bought a new cable, wired it into the electrical box on the camper, Voila, worked perfectly til we sold it.

You can buy just a new 7 pin connector for less money but for the difference in price I wanted the molded end so it would be more water proof

We are having a similar issue with our trailer. We have a 2017 GMC that tells us “check trailer wiring” trailer connected and then alarm. Had truck in shop and they replaced 7 wire plug due to recall but that didn’t fix the problem. We did have a chance to hookup to a similar new trailer and had no issues. Now they are fixing to open the belly of the trailer to checking wiring. Meantime , we have a new trailer sitting in shop and not at a campsite. Very frustrating! Good luck on your issue

I recall having the hitch and brake controller installed in my 07 f-150 years ago. The hitch shop had a little box that simulated a trailer in various ways to test the quality of their installation.

I bet a good hitch shop could test your tow vehicle for you.

Sounds like a bad ground somewhere. Could be on the truck or the trailer.

I had the same problem on my 2015 Ram 2500

I was pulling a cargo trailer form NY to Fl. and had the same problem. Investigating I noticed that if I wiggled the wire from the trailer it would start working until I started driving. More investigation I suspected the plug from the trailer, but when I got further south it no longer failed. I surmised that the cable from the trailer was not flexible when I was up north as it was below freezing temp. When I got to warmer weather it was more flexible, So I changed the plug end on the trailer with a more rugged plug. I have not had any problems since and I have been back north in freezing temps and worked fine.

Had the same issue with my lawn trailer, replaced the 7 pin plug (male end, trailer side) and the problem went away.

I had recently redone all the wiring on my trailer so I knew the wiring on the trailer itself was good...just got a bad plug I guess.
