Trailer wheel balance

I wanted to pass this on for all to consider.....I did a roadforce balance on the wheels of our 5er and was shocked at how out of balance they all were. Most trailer tires aren't balanced from the factory....can't imagine how much shake the trailer was enduring @ 60 mph! The tires show no signs of imbalance either!

Etrailer claims that their wheel/tire packages are balanced prior to shipping.
But I haven't actually had mine checked.

Most tire shops that I talked to state that you do not have to balance "trailer tires". Also they state that over a certain size you do not have to balance them, this size is normally 16 inches. But if you go to Goodyear tire service recommendations it states that all tires including trailer tires should be balanced. They also state that the trailer tire may cup or wear abnormally if the tire is not balanced.
So I balance my trailer tires and recommend that you do so also.

If a tire is going over 40 mph, it needs balanced whether it's on a trailer or a tow vehicle. Otherwise it will cup.

While I agree, I have never worn out the tread on a TT. The side walls always go 1st & I use tire covers all the time.

I get all of my trailer tires balanced. They live longer and so will your suspension parts.

X's 2 , I don't know why the RV manufacturers are not required to do this? But it seems they get away with alot...You wouldn't think of not balancing your TV....

Another word of warning, if you have TST TPMS Flow thru sensors, use all metal stems and BALANCE WITH THE SENSORS ON. We checked all 5 of mine with and without the sensors, the sensors threw the balance off by 0.5 ozs on all 5. That is enough to cause cupping while towing.

it's not "required" because we don't require it!

Had 4 new Marathons installed last week at a Good Year (exclusive) Tire store.
Installer in shop looked at me like I was crazy when I " reminded" him of balance, he stated "we never balance
Trailer tires"!
I asked him to look at service order, it clearly stated balance.
Glad I was in the shop, he also attempted to place the floor jack directly under axle tube ! Well inboard of leaf shackle too.
Says "we always jack on axle tube"
Sadly ya gotta watch me !

Ever thought of requiring the dealer to do it before taking it off the lot? I insisted on our 08Flagstaff and the salesman laughed until I said "Fine." and walked away. He immediately stopped laughing and said they'd do it even tho' they had never been asked to do it before. It was Tom Johnson's in Concord.

I can think of no good reason NOT to balance trailer tires.

Yes sir. This is something that may be overlooked. Solving one problem (monitoring psi) and creating another one. Those top heavy sensors are not recommended on rubber stems. Saw failures when I rode motorcycles.

This is why I've always jacked up my trailers; put on jack stands and take the tires to the tire shop. I just purchased tires last month for my 5er from a local tire shop. The owner told his guys to make sure they balance them. I stood there and talked to them while they did it. Surprisingly one of the four was perfectly balanced without weights.

Why would trailer tires be exempt? I's a no brainer to me....and when it takes 3-5 oz to balance it HAS to make a difference on trailer vibration.
Roadforce is a must with the stiffer sidewalls too.

Balance trailer tires

Forgot to add to my previous post, the Good Year tech? Who stated they never balance Trailer tires, the same tech who placed the floor Jack directly on the axle tube, also was at a loss when I asked him to Torque them. Says they don't do that either !
He stated that he did not know the torque, he would have to get the torque wrench. Asked me to look up the data and he would do it.
Amazing, as I stated earlier "Gotta watch em" !!!!!

When we replaced our Good Years last year at a Commercial Good Year store I was able to get them thru a friend who happened to be the area rep and he said no problem to balance them now the guy in the shop looked at me like I had 2 heads when I reminded them but after saying the rep insisted it was not a issue. Regarding torque they came and had me watch them do every wheel and then insisted to also check the air pressure in all of my tires including our tow vehicle.

Trailer tire balance

When I questioned about the torque, the "tech" tried to BS me and said the impact gun is pre set to right torque.. Can you imagine that? Now I want to re check the air pressure..
