I thought about buying a Cummins (you get a free Ram truck with every Cummins purchase ) and my wife LOATHED the Ram. The seats felt like I was sitting on plywood covered with carpet. Granted, I was looking at cloth interior trucks (I can't spend $10K for leather and gadgets), but it just felt really cheap. Different strokes for different folks, right!

Just another opinion here but after researching the big three and their diesels they are all nearly the same. The difference maker to me is the Allison transmission in the GM vehicles.

I went with RAM

I bought my Cedar Creek 36CKTS first then went and looked for a truck. The CC weighs 16,000 lbs. I wanted to stay single rear wheels, but looking at the weight charts in Motor home and Trailer life magazines, I would only have 1000 lb leeway. Therefore went with the RAM 3500 Dually. In the last 70 days been down from Maryland to the Florida Keys, now on way back. No problem pulling at all. I dislike leather seats and therefore have cloth, which I and my wife find very comfortable. Obviously it is diesel. I get 15 -18 mpg not hauling and 10 - 12 mpg hauling (don't forget, it is down hill from Maryland to Florida).

I've got a '13 Ram (in signature) and a buddy of mine has a '12 F250 powerstroke. I let him borrow my trailer, and it looked as if the front wheels were going to come off the ground, the back end sagged so much. We're talking about 900lb tongue, and the Ford looked like it couldn't handle an empty trailer. I'd be afraid to see how it looks loaded with water and toys (an additional 3500 pounds). So I don't know where the "Ram can't handle the weight" nonsense is coming from. When I tow fully loaded (10,500 trailer plus the family and another 750 pound quad in the bed), it tows rock solid, and climbs our Colorado mountains like nothing.

When you look at the history of engines, Cummins wins the reliability test, hands down. Just the fact that any V engine has 2 pistons sharing crankshaft lobes, means a V engine crank is going to wear and fatigue faster than a straight 6. Straight 6 engines also produce more torque, whereas more cylinders produce more horsepower. What do you need when towing? Torque, not HP. Sure, the Powerstroke and Cummins have similar torque numbers, but the 3500 w/Aisin transmission beat the Ford these days @900 Ft lb, though I'm sure Ford is working to catch up.

Lastly, compare the back seat of the Ford to the back seat of the Mega Cab Ram. There's just no comparison. The Ram is like a family room, and the Ford is just a back seat of a truck.

And for the record, the newer trucks are no longer part of the Dodge brand. Ram is its own brand these days. I'm just about to order up a brand new Ram 3500 and trade in my 2500. I wouldn't choose any other truck or engine, though I certainly looked at them all when I bought the 2500.

Thanks Dustman. I don't care for the non-leather interior of the ram, just looks/feels cheap.

I agree. It would have taken quite a bit to move me off of the Ram Megacab. Looks like I'll pair that to a Salem Hemisphere 356QB and call it a day.

I have owned all brands recently. I like the comfy ride of the Ram, but not a fan of it pulling a 5er. Could not wait to unload it. Would not sell it to anyone so traded it in. Not much difference between the Ford and GMC 2500 pulling 11,500 5er. Add the heavy Cat and the heavy trailer to the mix and both are overloaded by about 1800#. Only 3 miles at slow speed with a leader and follower vehicle and I would not pull out of the lot with the Jimmy. Thankfully, the new F450 arrived before the Cat was repaired.

Ram 3500 vs. Ford F350

I'm not brand loyal, but I know which one I'd chose if I were in the market for a dually.

I'm 60 years old, Ive had the F250 7.3 liter 2001 and the 6.0 liter 2004, I have no product loyal. I did my homework and I went with the 2015 Ram 3500 dually 6.7 liter Cummings, 4x4. Today I hit 40,000 miles, I pull 12,000 lbs TT with 3 grand kids in the megacab. I made sure I got the aison transmission with 373 rear end. I average about 18 mpg unloaded and I get 11 to 12 loaded, total rig weight on the scales with camper 20,500#
Its the best truck I have ever owned and I never worry about what I carry and what we put in the bed of the truck 2 scooters, 5 bikes on back of camper - I can tow up to 24,300 # or truck and Load not to exceed 32,000. I set the cruise on the speed limit and let this thing pull - nothing like it. If you look at the professional light load truckers 8 of 10 are pulling for the dollar with the Ram. My two brothers are heavy load truckers and they both think its 10 to 1 Ram in the light load trucking market. I say do your own homework and buy what you like best.

Thanks Lynn! Appreciate the info. I feel very strongly about going with what you want after doing the research - which is part of what lead me here.

You Ram/Dodge Fanboys really love this video! C channel frames flex, and they are designed to. It has nothing to do with overall strength. Hydroformed frames don't flex near as much. Ever see a semi or dump truck off road? The springs don't hardly flex at all, it's all in the frame, and they can go 1 million plus. What flexes doesn't break, and what doesn't eventually will. Ever watch a wooden roller coaster flex? If it didn't it would tear itself to pieces in no time flat. This is just pure BS propaganda for the uneducated.

I've owned them all. The GM trucks ride the best. 2011 and up. The 2015 + is amazing. My 2016 3500 dually rides better then my 2014 3/4 did. You will need a dually for a 15k unit.

Not a fan boy lol. Don't want to start a flame war, but I would be worried about metal fatigue on the Ford.

Frames aren't springs and I thought all trucks had fully boxed frames nowadays, thanks for the education! To be fair though, I think the F350 frame has been around a very long time 1999?, with the Ram only around 2010 I believe.

I'm not quite 2 years into my Ram, and 37K miles. The truck seems to be really good and pulls well, and I like the looks better than the others. And it's got a Cummins diesel, what more can you say about that? But I've had a few small problems that seem to turn into bigger problems. While some of that was the dealers I've taken it to, the problems existed, none-the-less. No major stuff, but electronics and the like. I can honestly say that if I had to do it all over again, I'd pay the extra $5,000- and get the F-250. GM products are something I'll never own again, but that's another story... and it's LLLLOOOOONNNGGG.......

I have owned nothing but Fords since 1970. But, when we started towing a larger fifth I wanted torque and reliable. For sure the Fords all had much more comfortable cabs. The RAM we purchased was pretty bare bones. After all, it was meant to work not go to dinner and a show.

Did my homework for several years. Cummins for a number of reasons beat others hands down. Ours is a 2004 which is what, the 5.9? We also have the New Venture six speed manual. My wife wanted to feel like she was in control so she specified the manual trans.

So far 100,000 miles and almost all towing fifth wheels of around 10,000. No problems.

I still wish I had the Ford cab or maybe one of the new RAM cabs.

Just for drill, ask an independent diesel mechanic about the cost of ownership for each of the three diesel choices. What happens if, for instance, you have a turbo failure?

I plan to leave my RAM to whomever has to settle our estate. I will never sell the truck.
