Truck Cap/Topper

Good People,

Your reading one mans heart breaking story and I will keep it short. I bought and A.R.E and it was not a good experience. Product quality was bad and dealer was giving me the run around of that's how truck caps go. The gate lines did not match up and the front seated to far back which made the vertical lines not match up with the truck cab. Anyway I was luck enough to get my money back after going up above the manufacture to there parent company in order to get the return.

Next story, I bought a Snugtop Xtra Vision. Problem with fit again. It sat to far forward and the lines did not match up. Also, I could get my finger between the cap and truck 2" vertical in spots. The overhang seemed excessive. Again, I was extremely lucky to get a refund on a "custom" truck cap. None were a custom fit worth $2800.

To date, I am shopping for another one. I guess LEER is my last chance at getting a truck cap. I believe the rest are all private labeled from one of those 3 mentioned. Has anyone else ever had this kind of issue with a truck cap? Do you have recommendations? This is on a 2017 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 5'8" short bed.

Thanks.

If your truck is a common color, you might be able to find a good used one for a lot less... (or have it painted to match...) I found a like-new fiberglass Jeraco on Craigslist for $550, drove about 120 miles to get it, and couldn't be happier. Not a single scratch or blemish... It was the first used one I looked at & I liked it better than a new A.R.E. I had received a quote on. I used "SearchTempest" to check all Craigslist cities within 250 miles...

The owner just bought a used truck for his business, was replacing the cap with a ladder rack & just wanted it off his truck ASAP... I wasn't expecting this quality for the money... The outer lip makes a snug fit matching the curve of the PU bed all-around & the windows are tinted like my truck. The sliding windows w/screens on the sides & front are not spectacular quality but they have retained their seal & slide-action for the past 3 years I have owned it.

Thoughts on trimmed or trimless bottom edge?

I have a Leer and overall I would say the fit is good. There are a couple of places where the window is a little far back. Overall, I am very happy with it. I Have a 2014 sierra with a 6.5 ft bed. No shell is 100% sealed.

I have a Leer that fits pretty good. Had it trimmed so I could mount a roof rack on the truck bed. The topper lays on top of the roof rack mounts.

Update. Looking to pull the trigger and buy LEER XR or Century Ultra Sport?

I bought the LEER for a 2014 2500HD short bed. It's OK, not a perfect match to the cab height. Ordered it with the lifting side windows which are great. They could have sealed the glass to the window frames a little better. Over the past couple years water leaked down into the channel where the latches are and there is a bent piece of sheet metal which holds the latches in place and has rotted through. Kind of a PIA to replace but not expensive for the part. I have a couple more to replace yet. I have a couple lock mechanisms that need to be replaced because the lock tumblers are corroded. Make sure you regularly lube them

Bought a SnugTop for my last truck. It had a blemish in the paint on one spot. The dealer sent it back and ST fixed it perfectly. It look more like a shipping scratch.
It worked flawlessly for as long as I owned it.

10-4. The fit on both the A.R.E. and Snugtop blew. I would post a pic but cant figure out how to. Bought the LEER 100 XR. Either way I will have tried all three and will update this to let you know the fit on it. I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab. On both the Snug and ARE the front of the canopy had been cut. Do they have to do that for installation? I thought they were molds made to fit. Dunno. This was done with both caps from two different dealers. The dealers were official dealers for the companies. Dunno. Well again I feel REALLY lucky to have gotten my money back on both. Regardless of how the LEER fits its the keeper.
