Thumbs up Truck Mod - RetraxPro and Tailgate Lock Actuator

In the spirit of truck mods discussions - I thought I'd post about a couple of little things we did (well, had done). The original plan when we got the 3500 DRW was that it was going to be dear wife's (DW) daily driver (DD). I had a 55 mile round-trip commute and there was no way I was doing that in the truck. She putters around town, taking the kids to and from school (~1 mile each way), etc.

She needed a "trunk" so she could store the stroller and other misc. wifely gear.

We picked up a Retrax Pro cover from AutoAnything.com. This gave us a lockable cover. It was supposed to be fairly water tight*. It was easy to lock and then just stow and retrieve things by putting the tailgate cover down.

That left the hassle of manually locking and unlocking the tailgate. We don't have a normal key for starting the truck, so you have to pull a normal key out of the inside of our keyfob anytime that you wanted to lock/unlock it. It was a hassle. For about a hundred bucks, we had the dealer install a lock actuator that tied the tailgate lock into the power locks of the rest of the truck. It's a thing of beauty!

* The water tight issue - our cover always let water in. I contacted Retrax about it via email. They requested pics of the water leaking through. Within days of receiving those pics, I got a call that I'd be receiving a new cover + canister assembly. That arrived today. I'll put it on this week and we'll see how it does!

I sure like our Retrax cover although I just have the poor mans version not the pro. Glad to see Retrax stands behind their product the way the do and looked after you.

It was impressive. The hardest part was getting pictures of water in a dark area against a black background!

I literally had my daughter close me in the bed with a work lamp and my good camera while she sprayed a hose onto the cover from the outside. She enjoyed the heck out of it, of course.
