So most of my towing was prior 2003 and I just put a hitch on it, brake controller in and towed. A 1984 Club Wagon was the First, 351 V8. Then a 1986 Grand Marquis, then a 1996 GMC Safari. They just worked fine!

I think the OP 1997 Ford F 150 will do just fine with the trailer. Back then the options for XLT or Lariat trim would have been some aluminum chromed pieces or stick on woodgrain on the dash. They didn't add NAV, leather AC seats etc so weight reduction was not near as much compared to the base truck.

What in the world is a payload? I googled it and it's talking about aircraft carriers

I'm not sure if it matters- because we already have our set-up and it seems to tow fine....but now I'm wondering if we are accidentally exceeding some limit. Help please?

We have a 1997 Ford F-150 4X2 v8. And a 2015 Salem Cruise Lite 261BHXL with a dry weight of 4318 (if I remember correctly).

How in the world would I discover my payload?
Payload is the max amount of weight the read axel/ bed can hold to be legal, I hope this helps your question.
As for all the info about your truck or most any truck go to trailer life towing guides and they will walk you through every step of what you need to know to be legal and safe for all.

As for the person you was be careful about the weight police, don't worry more and more states are making rv's come onto the scales, so everyone's day is coming soon!
