Without having any additional info I'm just going to take a wild guess as to what your problem is. After chocking the tt tires, be sure to bump the tv forward just a bit to move the hitch ball as far forward in the socket as possible and also make sure there is no upward load from the jack.

I am assuming you are unhitching the trailer. Grease (or lubricate the ball). As noted above chock the TT. I have to raise the hitch pretty good to get my WDH disengaged. Once the bars are removed, I start lowering the hitch with the trailer jack with one hand and trying to pull the decoupler (or whatever that things called that holds the ball in) up and back at the same time with the other hand. My ball usually drops right out.

Does this only occur when unhitching after backing up or does it do it after moving forward too. If it is only backing up, the ball is at the back of the socket and the pawls that grip the bottom it can not release. Once you are set and ready to unhitch, simply move forward about 1/2" and you should be OK.

WD 40 and big hammer if none of the above work. My TT from new didn’t like to disengage. So after I unhooked liberal spraying of lubricant and a hammer worked it back in forth till it was smooth. No heavy banging was required just enough to get it working

One more thing speaking from experience. If you have someone bump your truck forward to unbind give clear instructions. Trailer was bound up ask the wife to pull it up. I was thinking 1/8 inch she was thinking 8 feet. Yes she was standing there watching and heard me say it was in a bind but none of that meant a darn thing. Don’t assume they know

Depending on which way it's binding you may need to move the TV back instead of forward.

When new the mechanism may be very tight and stiff. It should loosen up with use.
Clean the mechanism with WD40 and then lubricate with spray can of white lithium grease.

I call it the safety catch - what is the correct nomenclature?

We have to jack ours up and down as well as bumping either forwards or backward all the while trying to find that sweet spot. It often helps to jump up & down on the hitch bar or bumper. In our case, it is so bad that we are considering having the cup replaced.

I read some were that on the hitch coupler that the ball catch underneath or inside that grabs the ball there is a bolt for adjustment to make a little looser if needed. haven't tried but read about it
