Tundra Crew Max and 5W
I am looking on getting a Flagstall 2012 8528BHSS 5W and pulling it with my 2012 Tundra Crew Max. I know I need a auto slide hitch and it already has Timblins. Anyone else pulling something simular? Looking for information. Thanks

Not sure but I believe your crewmax has a max payload of abt 1550 lbs and given that 5ver has a dry pin weight of 1369lbs, by the time you had the truck loaded with people etc and the trailer loaded you would likely be wayyy over the factory rating not that that has stopped people before though from ignoring the factory ratings.

I would seriously look at the payload numbers before making a decision.
FYI - a pullrite superglide hitch weighs 290lbs per the factory so that will eat a good chunk of the available payload you have.

TheSasks is spot on, imo. You need to know what your truck can actually carry in terms of payload - from that, you have to start subtracting for people [minus 150 pounds for a driver already included], gear, fifth wheel hitch and the weight of the pin pushing down into the bed of the truck. As you can imagine, payload is eaten up quite quickly.
Finally, the dry pin weight is a pretty unrealistic number as no-one pulls a completely empty fifth wheel. Heck, simply adding options at the factory adds to that number. For me, I took the percentage that represented the dry pin weight of the dry weight of the trailer. I then took that same percentage and applied it to the "gross vehicle weight" of the trailer as if I had fully loaded it. This gives you a good guess of what your actual pin weight could be up to. It can be a little higher, little lower depending on how you pack - but given that most fifth wheels have the front storage compartment, my money is on a little lower.

Suggest that you use the search function on here with 'towing a 5th wheel with a half ton'...lots of previous threads.
Manufacturer's like to claim that their 5th wheel is half ton towable, but they're only looking at the max towing spec of half tons, not the impact of pin weight on available payload. Payload, GVWR or RAWR are the limiting factors with 5th wheel towing.

If the Tundra can tow a 300,000 pound Space shuttle & trolley, seems like it should tow a little Flagstaff; shouldn't it? Well, assuming the journey was 1/4 mile on a flat road doing 5 miles an hour.
The Tundra Endeavour
I agree with the above statements on weight. I too was considering a 5th wheel for my Tundra, but hitch weight is my hold back. Just had to show the funny things people do with their trucks... even manufacturers. Didn't I see a Ram comercial with one falling out of the sky, big dust cloud, then taking off? Makes me wonder why I slow down pulling 7,000 pounds up steep inclines....

I will also say that those crewmax Tundra's are very nice machines but I think if you already own the truck, perhaps you would be better served and safer with a nice lightweight travel trailer as there are many very nice floor plans out now and the tongue weight of a tt is much lower than the pin weight of even the lightest 5ver.

I not a wrench head by any means but why is it called a 1/2 ton if the payload is 1550? Wouldn't that be a 3/4 ton? Just asking.

Currently have a 2010 DBL Cab Tundra hauling a Flagstaff 8528RLWS. Have run approx 5000 miles with no problems. Using a Reese Revolution hitch on the trailer w/a 16k Husky FW.

I have a similar set up as you.
Been 4 years now. No issues at all.
Pleanty of power, pleanty of stopping power.
But, I would still recommend a 3/4 ton truck.
I have added E rated tires and Air bags but it's still a 1/2 ton.
I scale out at 1,200 lbs of pin weight.
Add the hitch, people, and minor cargo and I am very near the GAWR.
With the OP's trailer he will exceed GAWR.
I wouldn't do it.
Maybe a smaller fiver is in order.
Just my 2 cents.
Bill

Does that mean that you're had your set-up across a set of scales and compared them against the truck's towing specs?

Our Rockwood 8280WS pin weight loaded was 1240 lbs when I towed with a Ram 1500 which put the the just under it's RAWR. Towed it for 2 years and only had one incidence that I didn't feel comfortable...that was in some 45+ mph cross winds. I wouldn't recommend exceeding any truck's RAWR, but that's just me.

the term 1/2 ton refers back to a time when that was a fairly accurate description of trucks payload rating. when the truck wars heated up in the 90's every manufacturer started building up their trucks and weight ratings began to climb. The 1/2 ton truck of today borders what a 1 ton was capable of 25 years ago.

My Tundra CM only has a 1320# payload. You would be way over with that 5'er. I am right on the line with my light SP295 with 750# of tongue weight by the time I add in my family and gear. There are plenty that tow over the limit with the Tundra with no issues, but the fact is that you are still over.
