Who is using Tundras to tow with and what are you towing?

Me!!! 2008 Tundra DC SR5 with tow package. Currently I tow a Flagstaff 21 FBRS. Previously I towed at 37’ Cougar Xlite. We just purchased another new to us 2016 Tundra Crew Max. We’ll continue to tow with the 08 for the next few years. I love our Tundra.

Clifford is a 2011 crewmax that we have been towing our EVO 2850 with. We have overcome the hills out here in the west by adding an AFE intake and TRD dual exhaust. I have also added sumo springs in the rear and has greatly improved the loaded ride.

I have a 16 dc and tow a 8311 Signature Ultralight. The longest trip so far was from Cincinnati to Cherokee NC.

Our son pulled for years with Tundra. No problems with pulling within it's weight range. Lots of power. He loved that truck. The problem was horrendous fuel mileage empty or loaded.

Then he wanted to move up to a fifth wheel. Goodbye Tundra.....

I was close to buying one in early 2006 but didn't pull the trigger. I really wanted a 2nd generation but didn't want to wait till the end of 2006 so I traded in my 2004 ForeRunner Sport AWD with the V8 and bought a 2006 Chevy 2500HD as my new TV

I pulled my 20' Salem Lite with a 2004 Tundra 4.8l. It was OK on the flats but hills were terrible, sometimes I was doing 25mph on freeway hills (i.e. net extreme grades). It also got 7-9mpg when towing. Now I have a Duramax Silverado , won't ever go back. It's way too much truck for my little trailer but I bought it for the next trailer...

We had a '14 Tundra that we really liked. Problem was that the TT in the signature overloaded it even with just the two of us. As with most folks, we explored every avenue to avoid being overweight - all to no avail. Hence the Chevy 2500.

2007 Tundra with tow pkg. 5.8ltr long bed. Pulling 2018 hyper light bhhl. 24' Trailer pulls well with equalizer. Had a 1999 dodge with Cummins that I wore out at 165k miles. Got to where it was a 500.00 repair bill every time I used it. 3 sets of brake lines, shock mounts, shackles. replaced basically everything underneath that could rust away. When it came time for the 2nd set of fuel pumps and rails at 2700., I said that was enough.

we have pulled a 2018DBHSLE33 With a 2017 Tundra Crew max SR5. We live in Florida and go to State parks in Georgia and South Carolina. The 2017 tundra was recently totaled in an accident and we now Have a 2019 Tundra crew max Limited, still healing from accident and have not had a chance to tow with the new vehicle. Safe travels

About to take delivery of a new 2019 Rockwood Ultralite 2706WS, dry weight is 6807# (max loaded is around 8800). I have a 2014 Tundra Crewmax SR5 with the 5.7L and towing package. Only “concerns” I have going in will be the lack of range given the 26 gallon fuel tank and the Tundra’s notoriously low fuel mileage. I’ll try and update in a couple of weeks after our first trip.

We are so different. That 8800 lb TT could yield a tongue weight of about 1300+ lbs. Not only does that exceed the receiver spec. but 1300 subtracted from your 1500 lb payload means that you can put gas in it but not people or gear and stay within spec.

Yes, Tundras are overbuilt but they are still a ½ ton truck. I swapped my 2014 for a Chevy 2500 that I like just as much and is safer fo us and the people on the road with us.

I figured a max 15% of trailer weight (for the tongue) which came to 1320. Without the actual trailer on hand we are just guessing anyways. I’m at GCWR (not over) if I load the trailer to MGW and the truck is at MGW, so that was what I based my decision on. I don’t plan on any dry camping so probably won’t be towing any distances with the tanks loaded. Thanks for the advice, have a nice evening.

Not a Tundra but the related Sequoia, it’ll tow my 4718 lb Primetime Avenger ATI 26BB. I do eventually want to get a truck to haul my motorcycle along.

I pull w/ a 2014 1794 Crew Max. Pull a 2715 Flagstaff V-Lite, 7200 lb. Great truck, as others have said, tried everything to make it work. My tongue weight is 1060 loaded. Brochure says 760 dry weight, they lie. I should have known w/ his and her sinks, 2-30 lb. tanks and the battery on the nose. FR builds this trailer w/ 3 different names, all different weight in the brochures, Hum. So going to the "Dark Side", diesel as we are heading to the mountains this year for 6 wk. trip. Wife retired so ready to go, wish we could wait to see what the new 2020 are going to be. I like the early info on the Ford 7.3 gas or redesigned 6.7 diesel w/10 speed. Curious how much the price will go up, and never buy anything 1 st. year of a redesign.

mmock Average camp ready “wet” weight is nearly 1,000 pounds over brochure “dry” weight so the most accurate estimate for your TT would be 7,800 pounds.

Tongue weight when using a WDH seen (as in legally on a scale) is no longer fixed or static but is distributed via leverage of the WDH some of which goes back to the Trailer axles as proven or seen on your scale slip. Additionally how you load that TT will put more onto the tongue or back on the TT axles. Many benefits to property distributing the load. One big one big one being that to a point you can set the tongue weight. I typically work toward setting TW for a TT to 12.0 percent. Theoretically on your TT that would be 936 pounds. (scales typically way in 20 pound increments so).

Anyway it helps you meet GVWR and much more importantantly for safety & stability; TW percentage, replace unloaded steer weight, and to not grossly exceed max drive axle rating. The difference in set up here can be legal spec safe n stable all the way to overweight one place or another with the proverbial white knuckle ride.
