well my 2005 Duramax LLY has let me down bigtime. both head gaskets leaking, apparently a known weakness in these engines. By the time it's all said and done, truck will be down for 2 weeks, and the repair bill will be nearly $7000, due to cracked heads, plus a couple fittings that broke and/or disintegrated during teardown, and other items that it just makes sense to do while the truck is this far torn apart.

missed a planned camping trip with our good friends due to lack of TV..

about a month ago, before any indication of problem, I actually test drove a 2013 duramax with only 13k miles on it, and decided NOT to spend the money... man, if I had a time machine...

I was loving my duramax after having to spend a amall fortune on keeping my dad's 6.0 ford running the last couple years, that engine is a cesspool of known problems, none of which Ford will acknowledge. bad EGR coolant valve took out the turbo, then later it needed all new injectors, and the truck only has 80k on it.

If I didn't need the towing capacities of the diesels for my business trailers, I would seriously go back to gasoline motors in a heartbeat.

Thanks for letting me vent, I feel better now, but still truckless until at least next week !

That blows. Our power sports instructor is in the exact same boat with his duramax.

Makes me glad I went with the V10.

Don't forget the arp head studs when you put the heads back on!!

Good news is the issue was discovered before it could leave you stranded while on your camping trip.

You can't lump all trucks together, some are good some are bad, just like RV's I have 6.0 with 133,000 miles on it NEVER a problem but never put tuners on it or changed a thing. Just had it in at Ford. They tested everything and did my recommended service. Oil and fuel filters, transmission serviced and fluids replaced, New front Rotors and brakes on the front. Yes it cost me but I have tried to takecare of my truck. Only Ford recommended parts and fluids. I'm just saying that anything can happen but everyone needs to due there best to keep it in spec. The day of backyard shade tree mechanics are now over and has been for awhile. Sorry to hear about your troubles, but it can happen to any truck now a days. Not just Ford or chevy or Ram Americas big three let alone the Toyota's and now I seen my First Honda pick-up the other day. knew they made them but never saw one.

the 6.0 ( 6blow) ford (navistar) diesel is not worth saving just way to many issues for those that haven't had issues then you should by a lottery ticket lol the 6.4 was better but had issues as well. the new 6.7 is a very nice build however up until 2015 they had bearing issues in the turbo. pre 15 swap out to a 15 turbo and good to go. break downs with tv's do suck and hate to hear that. just out of curiosity......what kind of egt's have you seen or highest egt's have you seen towing loaded with the duramax? i only ask because i have 3 friends that love there duramax's and only one w/o gauges. once he finally added gauges he was shocked at how high the factory computer was letting the egt's get to and wound up in the same boat as yourself , well gaskets but head were re-usable. the aluminum heads can't take the heat the iron heads of the older diesels can. they all have known issues though and knowing those issues and weeding them out up front is the best way however there is no fixing the 6blow imo lol

Actually, a bullet proofed 05-07 6.0 (6.no?) Can be a pretty dang good diesel. Find one with an issue for pennies on the dollar and have a competent diesel shop bullet proof it and you can have a pretty strong and reliable truck without emissions crap for 1/3 the price of a new one.

I know the early duramax had injectors that lasted about 100k.

6.4 PSD had weak valve springs. When those fail its game over. New motor time.

24V cummins weakest link was the dang auto trans behind it. Father had his rebuilt 2x, also replaced high and low pressure pumps on separate occasions. It left him stranded with his camper once, had to have both towed home. Another time he was able to limp into the next town.

I see a lot of issues with engines here with all brand. People sometime more than not people mess with tunes and chips and blow them up. If left stock, serviced most run just fine.

oh yeah removing emission gear harms the environment too! No different that VW fooling the EPA and others with test defeat.

The 6.0 was able the meet the EPA emissions of the period with out a DPF or DEF.

I know a lot of people with a Ford 6.0 and never had a problem they maintained them and didn't add chips and C@@p. If I had to replace my 6.0 I would do it then to buy a new truck except maybe the new 2016 F-250. Once again people lump all together no matter what. Just like RV's some never have a real problem and some are plagued with them. What a joke just had LOL.Thanks for my morning chuckle, HAVE you ever owned one?...

If your truck is blowing smoke white or black, you have a problem, and you better have it look at, both are true tail signs to a good mechanic.....I bet Bob can tell you which each one means.... How about it OC WEST.

Maybe to you, I heard others call him worst. Didn't mean to comment on your truck, but was trying to answer your comment about smoke, old diesels use to smoke not the new ones, they run cleaner then a gasser. Just ask VW...
