I've just recently purchased my first travel trailer and am wondering if I need to up my gross weight on my truck registration? Do I need to add truck weight plus trailer weight and register that weight? If I do that, does that mean I need to get yearly safety check or are we exempt from that because we are not considered commercial?
IN the lower 48 your truck is already registered by max tow weight and or payload .
or gvcwr you do not have an option to register it any other way that I know of .
I can only assume it would be the same up north of the border no ?

Our class G license allows us a combination of vehicle and towed vehicle of up to 11,000kg. The allowed towed vehicle weight is 4600kg but can exceed this if it meets certain criteria.
As for the MTO they are only concerned with the braking ability of the Tow Vehicle and Travel Trailer, mainly that the Travel Trailer weight does not exceed the tow rating of the Tow Vehicle.

Out west (British Columbia), we are insured by GVW, so you can be underinsured when towing and depending on load, trailer is included with your load. DOT goes by axle ratings and GVW for towing. exceed any of the three and they'll park you. we usually have DOT doing a RV blitz with portable scales on the major highways on the upcoming may long weekend

In Vermont you need to be registered for the weight your vehicle will weigh fully loaded, including trailer tongue weight. I am guessing most don't do this. The standard registered weight for passenger cars and light trucks is 6099#. My F150 weighs more than that with me in it, let alone the family and trailer!

I have just started pulling a Wildcat (dry weight about 8600 lbs, likely just over 10,000 lbs loaded) with a Ram 3500. The salesman did not say if there were any special requirements. I travel in BC and plan to go south for the winters.
When I bought the insurance nothing was said about weight restrictions.
Doe's anybody know if I need a special licence or anything?

In NB the weights and measures guys are stopping a lot of 1500's or F150's base trucks hauling to check to see if they are within the weight ratios. If not you're screwed. I'm using the Echoboost with the 8300 tow package so my trailer and stuff is under the max per vehicle

Here you have to register your truck based on what you are towing. If you are over 5000kg (11,000 lbs approx) Your registration goes up in price for a sort of road tax and you need to have a certificate of safety compliance as well if you travel outside the province. I had to register at 17,000lb GCWR which is displayed on the trucks registration.
