I am leaning towards gorilla glue & cooking silicone tray material cut up as handle covers & on the edges of that old chrome box.... have to wait a month until the truck gets back from being painted. If people can cook in the oven with that thin silicone it should hold up to FL sun ... will let y'all know how it goes (& may get a utility patent if it works :-) )

If it's stationary? Lay a moving quilt on it. It will shade/insulate from the sun. Harbor freight=cheap

I put a pair of the Undercover Swing Case storage boxes in my Toyota Tundra early last year and paid lots less than shown on their website cited above (about $300 for the pair on Amazon.com). They work very well and hold plenty of essentials for the road. They lock and also swing out for easy access over the tailgate. And they can be removed easily by lifting them off their hinge pins. Full depth of the cargo area is retained.

Can you fold a thin sheet of aluminum over it and tuck the edges underneath? Then tape it on the inside?

Gloves still sound like the easiest solution so far. Can't even imagine how cut up cooking trays would look

grilling gloves ...that may be the solution (I just hate that DH wants to spend $$$$ to get a new box when I don't think it will be that much cooler to the touch)

Lets face it. It is not heat factor it is the neat factor. Rebuilding a truck and using a old worn out toolbox. I wouldn't go for that either! Need a new one!!

I don't seem to be able to understand the problem here. I put the aluminum diamond plate toolbox in my truck in early 1994. Painted it black about five years ago, then moved it to my new truck in '14. It does get a little hot at times but never in 23 years had a problem opening it.
